Introduction:
Math is a beautiful abstract game, worth investigating just for its own sake. It also happens to
have lots of interesting and useful applications. We use combinatorics a lot. People use basic
principles of combinatorics in everyday situations. Combinatorics is all about development and
applications of counting principles. A topic combinatorics problem begins with " In how many
ways or find the number of ways".
It definitely includes many things which involve a lot of mathematics. It might be very different.
We all have been using principles of combinatorics since our early childhood without even
knowing. Combinatorics in real world applications are the numerous background processes
which happen when people are too distracted to notice and are conditioned into thinking they
are doing something else.
Getting Started:
Ms. Maribeth is picking what to wear to school. She has two shirts, two pants and two pairs of
shoes.
📌How many possible combinations of outfits she does?
📌What ways can you find to efficiently count the number of combinations?
Exploring:
🌹Mix and match these two shirts, two pants and two pairs of shoes to find different
combinations.
🌹 Use models of all the possible outcomes, and experimental results, to compare the chances
of different outcomes.
🍂We turn first to counting. While this sounds simple, perhaps too simple to study, it is not.
When we speak of counting, it is shorthand for determining the size of a set, or more often, the
sizes of many sets, all with something in common, but different sizes depending on one or
more.

Making Conjecture:
We can label every outfit combinations to 1,2,3, or 4…. n and then see how many ways we
can mix and match them.
However this would take way too long, so an easier way would be to use the "choose formula".
Which is nCr
Justifying Conjecture:
nCr
Where n is the number of objects to choose from, and r is the number of objects to be
arranged.
2 2 2
Shirt Pants Shoes
We now multiply all of this together because that will tell us the amount of ways she can
arrange all of the outfit combinations.
2x2x2=8
She has 8 total outfit combinations.
Conclusion:
✨In this investigation we learn about systematically organising pairings of outfits, to find all the possible
combinations. It considers efficient ways to count the number of combinations. Finding all the
combinations is part of a theoretical approach to probability. Experimental results from selecting t-shirt,
pants and pair of shoes randomly are likely to vary considerably from the predicted frequencies.
