Professor Melissa Boyd-Colvin

50 Lower College Road
Memorial Union, Room 210
Kingston, RI 02881

Dear Professor Boyd-Colvin,

I am writing to you today to propose my internship plan to you today. I am interning with the
Center for Student Leadership Development, under the supervision of Professor Allie Jackson
Fraiser. I am assisting her in the class of HDF 413: Advanced Facilitation and Consulting Skills.
We are located in 50 Lower College Road, inside the Memorial Union, Room 210. Allie’s email
address is ajfraiser@uri.edu if you would like to contact her.

My why is quite simple, I am passionate about leading others and helping students grow. I took
HDF 413 last fall, and that class was pivotal to my growth and development at URI and my
professional career. Facilitation has opened my eyes to a different side of myself, and quite
frankly, I would not be here without it. I wanted the chance to aid in the development of students
just like me, and teach them the joys of facilitating. 3 learning goals I have in regards to my
personal strengths and values, is to help students grow, gain confidence and knowledge, and see
the growth of an organization from an outside perspective. Seeing students grow ties into my
personal value of appreciation of love and beauty. Seeing the beauty of my students intelligence
and dedication to learning ties into their growth, and helping them become the best versions of
themselves. Secondly, the gaining confidence and knowledge. With my value of Learner, I am
constantly learning about the world. With this goal in mind, I look forward to growing in my
knowledge which in turn will grow my confidence as I move forward into my senior year and
graduate programs. Finally, my developer strength ties into seeing a group develop. My love for
Tuckman’s model of development and seeing a group of students start to finish go through this,
while developing them in the beginning and taking that step back, knowing you played a small
role is something great. From a knowledge standpoint, being able to see this model play out is a
dream.

Some of my responsibilities of this position is to act as a support system for students as they
navigate the course and the semester. Within this role, I aid in signature assignments that are
fundamental to the minor in Leadership Studies. I support their facilitation learning, through both
debriefing and rubric exercises. I also help the students grow their experiential learning and
education. I work with the challenge and support model, whereas I am working on how to
challenge the students; where I know how to support them plenty. I focus on how to grow
myself, and take on whenever Allie needs me to. Each week, I have class from 3-6; I then have
bi-weekly meetings with Allie for an hour. I have weekly SOLC executive board meetings as
well. Each week, my schedule changes, but I have upcoming training retreats with additional
hours. I am on track to reach my required hours from my meetings with students, classmates,
Allie, and peers.

I am enthusiastic about this position and the opportunity to lead with love for facilitation with
these students.

Thank you for your time.

Best,
Emma M. North
