Part One : Reading for pleasure

Why read for pleasure? Because when we read for pleasure, we choose the book that we
read. We can read whatever we want, it is not what we read, but te enjoyment that matters. When
we read for pleasure, we will be tested about what you have read.

What are the advantaged of reading for pleasure?

Reading for pleasure can:

 Improve our vocabulary


 Increase our reading speed
 Improve reading comprehension
 Help improve writing
 Give you a chance to gain more knowledge
 Provide examples of the many different ways people speak and write in English

Part Two: Reading Comprehension Skills

We can learn how to make sense of what you read and remember it. In this material; we
will practice some important reading comprehension skills.
 Scanning
Scanning is very high-speed reading. Because when you scan, you have a
question in mind. Practice in scanning will help you learn to skip over unimportant words
so that you can read faster.

 Previewing and Predicting
When we gather information about a book by examining its cover, that are previewing.
The aim of previewing is to help to predict or make some educated guesses ebout what is
in the book.
 Vocabulary Knowledge for Effective Reading
When we try to guess the meaning of an unknown word, we use the text
surrounding the word—the context.
- Using grammar to guess word meaning
- Recognizing words that connect ideas
- Synonyms
- Summary words
 Topic
When read for the meaning, you should begin by looking for the topic.

 Topic of paragraphs
A Paragraphs is a distinct section of writing covering one topic. A paragraph will
usually contain more than one sentence. A typical paragraph will be 5-7 sentences, but
this is by no means a rule. The length of a paragraph is determined by the topic and the
content.
 Main Ideas
The main idea of a paragraph is the author’s idea about the topic. It is always a complete
sentence that includes both the topic and the idea that the author wishes to express about
the topic.

 Patterns of Organization
pattern of organization is somekind of method to show the relationships between
supporting details in paragraphs. shows us the signal word in paragraph, this signal point
to clarify the relationship of one detail in paragraph.
Four common patterns
- Listing of related ideas or examples, in this pattern the writer’s main idea is
stated in the form of a generalization. This is followed by a list of supporting
details.
- Sequence, the writer’s main idea includes a series events of step that follow
one after another.
- Comparison/Contrast, the writer’s main idea explains similarities and/or
differences.
- Cause-Effect, when the main idea is that one event or action causes another,
authors use the cause-effect pattern.
 Skimming
Skimming is high-speed reading that can save you lots of time. You skim to get general
sense of a passage or a book.
