Soil Classification

Instructions:

The data presented below shows the sieve analysis results and Atterberg Limits of the 2 soil samples.
Classify them using the indicated soils classification system.

Part 1: AASHTO Soil Classification System

A sample of soil was tested in a laboratory with the following results:

U.S. Sieve Number Percentage Passing

4 100
10 85.6
40 72.3
200 58.8

Liquid Limit: 46.20%

Plastic Limit: 21.90%

By referring to the table below :

Passing No. 40 Sieve = 72.3 %

36 % < 72.3%
Liquid Limit = 46.20%
41 % < 46.20%

Computations :

PI = LL − PL
PI = 46.20 % − 21.90%
PI = 24.3 %
11 % < 24.3 %

To identify whether the soil is classified as A-7-5 or A-7-6 :

𝐿𝐿 − 30 = 𝑁
46.20 % − 30 % = 𝟏𝟔. 𝟐𝟎 %

PI > 16.20 % (A-7-6)

To solve Group Index, GI :

GI = (F200 − 35)[0.2 + 0.005 (LL − 40)] + 0.01 (F200 − 15)(PI − 10)

GI = (58.8 − 35)[0.2 + 0.005 (46.20 − 40)] + 0.01 (58.8 − 15) (24.3 − 10)
GI = 12

Thus, the soil is classified as “A-7-6 (12)”

Part 2: Unified Soil Classification System

A sample of soil was tested in a laboratory with the following results:

U.S. Sieve Size Percentage Passing

3/8 in. 100
No. 4 76.5
No. 10 60.0
No. 40 39.7
No. 200 15.2

Liquid Limit: 30.00%

Plastic Limit: 12.00%

Computations :

PI = LL − PL
PI = 30 % − 12 %
PI = 18 %

Fine Fraction = Percent Passing the No. 200 Sieve

Fine Fraction = 15.2 %

Coarse Fraction = Percent Retained on No. 200 Sieve

Coarse Fraction = 100 % − 15.2 %
Coarse Fraction = 84.8 %

Gravel Fraction = Percent Retained on No. 4 Sieve

Gravel Fraction = 100 % − 76.5 %
Gravel Fraction = 23.5 %

Sand Fraction = (Percent Retained on No. 200 Sieve) − (Percent Retained on No. 4 Sieve)
Sand Fraction = 84.8 % − 23.5 %
Sand Fraction = 61.3 %

First Semester, A.Y. 2021 – 2022

By referring to the table below :

Coarse Fraction or Percent Retained on No. 200 Sieve = 84.8 %

84.8 % > 50 % (Coarse Grained Soils)

Sand Fraction = 61.3 %

Gravel Fraction = 23.5 %
61.3 % > 23.5 % (Sands)

Fine Fraction = 15.2 %

15.2 % > 12 %

PI = 18 %
18 % > 7 %

Plotting a graph :

Plotted above “A”’ Line

Identifying Group Symbol :

Thus, the Group Symbol of the soil is “SC”.

Identifying Group Name :

Gravel Fraction = 23.5 %

23.5 % > 15 %

Thus, the Group Name of the soil is “Clayey Sand with Gravel”.
