I. Objectives:

II. Subject Matter: Korean Fable: “ The Vanity of the Rat”

Materials: Strips of colored papers, pictures, bubbled illustration, envelop,projector

III. Procedure

A. Pre-Reading Activities
1. Motivation ( 4 Pics 1 word )
Look under your armchair and detach the colored paper mounted on it. Group
together those who have the same color then go to your designated area.
Let’s play 4 pics 1 word. Are you familiar with this game?
Good! So with your group write the correct word on the colored paper provided for
you in ten counts as I flash the pictures on the screen.
( teacher presents the pictures on screen)

First word: rat, second; marriage, third: partner, fourth: family, fifth: relationship,
fifth: love

2. Unlocking of difficulties
Who can guess the correct word from the jumbled letters ( a n t I v y )
Correct the word is vanity. The rabbit thinks he is the wisest, fastest and the most skilful
animal in the jungle. He adores no one but himself. Now from this situation what is
meant by vanity?

3. Presenting the objectives


This morning, you will be reading a Korean Fable entitled “The Vanity of the Rat by Y.T
Pyun. So in this lesson you are expected to do the following:
1. Infer character traits and note important details in the fable.
2. Compare and Contrast Filipino and Korean cultures.
3. Express philosophical or religious beliefs about Filipino and Korean cultures.

B. During Reading

Now I need volunteers to read the story. I need 2 narrators, Mr. Rat,Mrs. Rat, Rena, the
Sun, the Cloud, the Wall and Roger the Rat
The rest of the class listen and read by your eyes only.
(Reading of the fable. Copy is flashed on the screen)

C. Post Reading activities


1. Comprehension questions:
a. What characteristic of a prospective husband does Mr. Rat want for her
daughter?
b. Was Mr. Rat’s choice of a husband for Rena the best one? Why or why not?
c. Do the characters in the fable behave somewhat the same as human
beings? Why or why not?
d. What particular character of a Korean family is implicitly revealed in the
fable?
e. In Korea, it is their custom for parents to arrange the marriage of their
children. Why do you think Korean parents arranged the marriage of their
children?
f. Is this kind of practice found here in the Philippines?
g. Are their similarities or differences Korean and Filipino cultures have?
h. What moral can you get from the fable?

2. Group Activities
1st group activity: Write the particular conversation of the characters in the story in
the bubble illustrations and infer their personality trait by choosing from the pool of
words provided inside the envelop. You are given 5 minutes to do this activity

2nd group activity: With the same group, discuss your stand on this statement:
Parents should choose on their children’s partners in life or should interfere in
choosing their child’s husband or wife.Flash on the screen are philosophies and
religious beliefs you can anchor your discussion. After 5 minutes the group will
report/ share their stand to the class. Each group will be graded with the following
criteria:
a. Organization of ideas 15
b. Clarity of stand/ points 15
