Standard

Learning Students will be able to plan/organize their writing by using a boxes

Materials Boxes and Bullets Sheet

The boxes and bullets sheet will help students jot down their facts
Purpose and organize them in a coherent manor.

Launch:
Go to the classroom’s daily schedule and switch the order of some
of the periods. (Specifically, put breakfast, going home, lunch,
separate a double period, in random places of the day.) Then ask
the students if the schedule makes sense to them.

Guide the students through the discussion to arrive to the


conclusion that organization matters in a schedule, like how it
matters in our writing.

Ask the students, what’s the importance of having a table of


contents? (Get 2 - 3 answers)
Instruction
Introduction:
Using the power-point to introduce to the students the “I can”
statement for the lesson which would be, “I can use the table of
contents to plan my writing.” Then, elaborate that by filling out a
boxes and bullets sheet the same way they created their table of
contents, it will help them learn how to organize their writing more
efficiently.

Mini-Lesson:
[Slide 4] First, explain to the students what strong informational
writing includes, which is a logical structure, strong opening
sentence, that it covers the whole topic and doesn’t repeat
information.

[Slide 5] Then, explain to the students that in making a boxes and


bullets for one of their chapters that’s organized like the table of
contents, they’ll be able to apply these methods into their writing.

[Slide 6] Demonstrate to the students how to plan a chapter using


the boxes and bullets filled in as an example. Go through each
bullet point starting from the title of the chapter to the last bullet
point.

[Slide 7] Then, show them the example of the written chapter using
the boxes and bullets. The highlighted texts were extracted from the
boxes and bullets from before to emphasize the use of the method.
The text that’s underlined the elaboration of the related to the
highlighted text.

[Slide 8] Now, have the students write their chapter using a boxes
and bullets sheets for that section.

Have students turn to their partners and share their boxes and
