Launch:
Instruct students to turn and talk with the person sitting next to them
and have them come up with 2 reasons why it’s important to have
chapters in a non-fiction piece.
Introduction:
Using the presentation, start with slide 1 to introduce the “I can”
statement, to let them know they will be using their table of contents
Instruction for their informational writing piece. Include their responses from the
initial turn and talk to emphasize that the purpose of a chapter is
having focused texted.
Mini-Lesson:
[Slide 2] The teacher will refer to their table of contents and put a
star next to the one they have the most information on.
Students will turn and talk to the person sitting next to them to read
their chapter to each other.
Closing
After both students shared their chapter, they will be given an exit
slip with the question, “What goal you have that can improve your
chapter?”
