The purpose of using the table of contents to help them draft a


Purpose chapter is so that students can practice focusing their writing on one
topic.

Launch:
Instruct students to turn and talk with the person sitting next to them
and have them come up with 2 reasons why it’s important to have
chapters in a non-fiction piece.

Then, have the students share out why.

Introduction:
Using the presentation, start with slide 1 to introduce the “I can”
statement, to let them know they will be using their table of contents
Instruction for their informational writing piece. Include their responses from the
initial turn and talk to emphasize that the purpose of a chapter is
having focused texted.

Mini-Lesson:
[Slide 2] The teacher will refer to their table of contents and put a
star next to the one they have the most information on.

[Slide 3] The teacher will show the students an example of a


paragraph they wrote for one of their chapters.
Pose a challenge for the students! Set a timer for 20 minutes and
challenge them to see how much they can write their chapter during
that time.

Encourage the students to just write! The point of this activity is to


get them to write out their ideas. They don’t need to worry too much
on organization.

Students will write a draft of one of their chapters on their lined


Learning Task sheet.

Students will turn and talk to the person sitting next to them to read
their chapter to each other.
Closing
After both students shared their chapter, they will be given an exit
slip with the question, “What goal you have that can improve your
chapter?”

Written chapter in their lined sheet.

For struggle students, encourage them to draw a picture first of what


Differentiation they want their chapter to be about.
