KD. 3.3 & 4.3 (intention to do something)

A. Read the following illustration.

Next week is a semester holiday. You want to go somewhere to enjoy the weekend. It
means you have an intention to do something on the weekend. The plan is, you are going
out of town. Now, let’s learn how to communicate the plan to your friends.

Read the dialog below:

Hadi: “Hi Amir, what’s up?”
Amir: “Hello, I’m fine thanks. How about you?”
Hadi: “I am doing well. By the way, next week is the semester holiday. Have you got any
plans?”
Amir: “I don’t know, but I think I will spend the holiday at home with my parents. What
about you?”
Hadi: “I am going to go to Gili labak Island. I have never been there before.”
Amir: “People say the Gili labak is really beautiful. Which resorts will you visit?”
Hadi: “Perhaps, I will go to the Beach.”
Amir: “Will you surf, then?”
Hadi: “No, I won’t. I cannot swim, Amir.”
Amir: “So, What are you going to do there?”
Hadi: “I am going to enjoy the sunset, play sand on the beach and enjoying the scenery.”
Amir: “That sounds great! I hope you enjoy your holiday, Hadi.”

The above dialogue illustrated about the holiday plan or an intention on going for a
vacation.
There are basically two ways in expressing intentions, or purpose.
First, when the decision is already made before a conversation takes place.
Second when the decision is made spontaneously during a conversation.

For spontaneous expressions, the pattern is:

S + will + V1 + O
Look at the example from dialog above:
- I think I will spend my holiday at home with my parents
- Perhaps, I will go to Gili Labak Beach
- I don’t think I will surf
But when we have a plan or intention to do something in the future, we usually use other
forms of future tense. We use “ be going to”.

Let’s study the patterns:

S + be + going to + V1 + O
Look at the example from dialog above:
- I am going to go to Gili Labak Island. I have never been there
- I am going to enjoy the sunset and play the sands on the beach

Preposition of time used in this tense are:

- Tomorrow
- Next
- Next week
- Tonight
- Next month
- Etc

Below, some other expressions about plan or intention

Examples of expression in asking for plan or intention:
- Where will you go next holiday?
- What will you do after graduating from college?
- What’s your plan tonight?
- What will you do next week?
- What do you plan to do?
- What are you going to do tomorrow?
- What do you want to do?

Expressions of stating intentions:

- I plan to…
- I intend to …
- I am going to ….
- I will watch a movie tonight
- I am thinking of …..
- I’ve been thinking about …
- I’m planning to ….
- I’m decided to …..
- I want to ….

C. Here are examples of some dialogues. You learn those dialogues before
making your own dialogues.

Dialogue 1:

Dian : Hey, you look so serious. What is the matter?

Budi : oh….I am just thinking about something
Dian: What is it about?
Budi: I am thinking that I am going to hold a birthday party in our class in this year.
Dian: Wow, Sounds Great to me!
Budi: Really? You think so?
Dian: Sure. But what is the purpose of that party?
Budi : I am just thinking that is the best idea to gathering all of our class members.
Dian: I think it would be nice if we also make some compositions.
Budi : Ok. Now. I need to have permission from head master. I need his permit to use class
room and talk to our teacher advisor to ask her to come and participate in that party.
Dian : Is there anything that I could do ?
Budi : we also need to make permission’s letter to give to our parents. It would be helpful if
your make it.
Dian : Sure. With my Pleasure.

Dialogue 2:

Santi : So, what about you, Bayu? Do you have any plans?
Bayu : Definitely! My dad and I are going to go fishing. We plan to go fishing in a
fishing pool near my uncle’s house. Would you like to come with us?
Santi : I don’t really like fishing. I would rather stay at home than go fishing. What about
you, Riri? What would you like to do on the long weekend?
Riri : I have made a plan with my mother about what to do on this long weekend. We
are going to practice baking cakes.
Bayu : Are you going to bake chiffon cake like the last time?
Riri : Well, yes. That is my favourite. But we will also try to make corn flake cookies.
Riri : Oh, would you like to join me to learn baking cookies? You can come to my
house.
Bayu : It’s a good idea! Or will you go fishing with me and my dad?
Santi : Uhm, not fishing I guess. But I think I would like to bake cookies with Riri.
Thanks for asking me to join you Riri.

Lizaa: Sure, I would love to go with you. When would you be leaving?
Hafiz: I thought that we could leave around 6:00 am on Saturday morning.
Lizaa: That would give us plenty of time to explore. Did you know that there is a music
festival on the beach in Santa Barbara?
Hafiz: That was part of my plan.
Lizaa: Well then, I’ll see you on Saturday. Thanks for asking me to go with you.

Soon when the government allow all students can study in school again, I will study hard to
getting best reward in exam and report book to reach scholarship and get college in Tokyo
University.
