DEFINITION
Expressing intention is an expression that is used to state plans or something
intended to do in the future. (Expressing intention adalah ekspresi yang digunakan
untuk menyatakan rencana atau sesuatu yang ingin dilakukan di masa depan)
 
PURPOSES
The purpose of expressing intention is to tell other people about our intention or
plan to do something in the future.
We use be going to + simple form of the verb and would like to + simple form of
the verb, and we use the statement form. For asking, we use the question form.

The example of expressing intention:


1. She is going to buy birthday cake for her sister's birthday party.
2. He would like to write a memo for his staff after meeting.
3. Our teacher will give us new project next weekend.
4. Would you like to pick your brother up tomorrow?
5. My father would rather go to his office by bus than drive his car.
SOCIAL FUNCTION

Social function:
To state plans or something intended to do in the future (Fungsi
sosial dari mengungkapkan niat adalah untuk menyatakan
rencana atau sesuatu yang ingin dilakukan di masa depan.)

Examples of Expressing Intention:
 I would like to tell about my family
 I will visit museum today
 I want to make a pancake
 I am going to introduce my friend
 I would rather stay at home than go fishing
 I am going to ….
 I am planning to ….
 I will make an effort to ….
 I am thinking of …..
 I reckon I will ….
 I have every intention of ….
 I fully intended to ….
 It is my intention to ….
 
EXAMPLE
Here are the examples of expressing intention:
 I'm going to propose my girl friend tomorrow. (Saya akan
melamar pacar saya besok)
 My mom and I are going to go shopping on Sunday. (Ibuku
dan aku akan pergi berbelanja pada hari Minggu)
 I would rather stay at home than go  shopping. (Saya lebih
suka tinggal di rumah daripada berbelanja)
 I will pick up you tonight.  (Aku akan menjemputmu malam
ini)
 I would like to join English Club next week. (Saya ingin
bergabung dengan Klub Bahasa Inggris minggu depan)
To express willingness: use will
(+) Subject + will + V1 + Object/Complement
(-)  Subject + will not + V1 + Object/Complement
(?) Will + subject + V1 + Object/complement
 
(+) She will visit her cousins on the next holiday.
(-) She will not visit her cousins on the next holiday.
(?) Will she visit her cousins on the next holiday?
 
To express a prior plan: Use only be going to
 
(+) Subject + Be going to + V1 + O/C
(-) Subject + Be not going to + V1 + O/C
(?) Be + Subject + going to + V1 + O/C
 
(+) She is going to visit her cousins on the next holiday.
(-) She is not going to visit her cousins on the next holiday?
(?) Is she going to visit her cousins on the next holiday?
Conversation between Sarah and Ali:
Sarah              : Hello Ali, what are you going to do this weekend?
Ali                  : Hello, I am going to visit my grandmother in Jakarta.
How about you?
Sarah              : Well, I still do not have any plan for the weekend.
Ali                  : Why don’t you go to museum?
Sarah              : That is a good idea. But, I have to do my assignment
first. Have you done your assignment?
Ali                  : No, I have not, I’d like to do them this evening.
Sarah              : Well, can we do together?
Ali                  : Yes, of course.
Sarah              : Okay, great. I will go to your house at 4 P.M then.
Ali                  : I will be waiting for.
ASKING INTENTION
Asking for plan / intentions, here are the examples:
 What are you going to do this weekend ?
 What will you do tomorrow ?
 Are you going to Bandung ?
 Will you come to my house ?
 Will you go fishing with me in the lake?
 We are going to practice tennis this afternoon
 What would you like to do?
 What are you doing tonight?
 What will you do in the summer?
FORM AND STRUCTURE

Below are the form of Expressing Intention that can be used as an intention and

BE + going to + simple verb


Look at to the example
I am going to my friend’s house tonight 
The United State Circus is going to be perform in New York tomorrow 
Are you going to join me in a music contest?
What are you going to do this weekend?  
 
BE + planning to + simple verb
Look at to the example:
She is planning to go swimming in the public pool next week
I am planning to knit a sweater for my boyfriend 
Are you planning to run away from here?
Are you planning to date him 
BE + planning on + V ing
 
Look at to the following example:
 She is planning on translating the Japanese textbook tonight
 I am planning on fixing my dad’s old car tomorrow
 Are you planning on playing video games this weekend?
 Are you planning on running to the hill tomorrow morning?
 
Will + simple verb
 
Look at to the following example:
I will make my birthday cake at home
We will celebrate our first anniversary by going to the beach
Will you attend his birthday party tonight?
Will you marry me?
Would like to + simple verb
 
Look at to the following examples:
 I would like to present my science project at this moment
 I would like to get a ticket for tomorrow
 Would you like to discuss the recycling project tomorrow at 7 p.m?
 Would you like to come with me?

Would rather + simple verb + than + simple verb


 
Look at to the following examples:
I would rather bring my own food than buy food in the restaurant
She would rather stay in the house than go out with their family
Would you rather buy a new book or buy the old one?
Would you rather live in a country side or live in the middle of
town 
SHORT TALK

Dialogue 1
A: Could you buy me some meat and vegetables?
B: Sure. What are you going to do with them?
A: I’m planning to cook vegetables and meat stir fry
B: what is that for? (Untuk apa?)
A: I want to give it to my mom. She really likes meat and
vegetables. So, i intend to cook for her.
B: Wow, that’s cool. OK, i’ll buy them for you.
A: thanks a lot!
Dialogue 2
A: Hey,
B. What are you going to do this sunday?
B: Hey A. I’m going to visit my grandfather in Bandung. How
about you?
A: Hmm, I still do not have a plan for this Sunday
B: Why don’t you go to the movie theater and watch some cool
movies? A: Well, actually that’s a good idea. But, i have to do
my homework first. Have you done your homework?
B: Nope. i want to do my homework tonight.
A: Shall we do our homework together?
B: yeah sure, why not.
A: Okay, awesome! I will go to your house at 6 P.M. is that
cool?
B: Yeah cool, see you soon. A: see ya!
