segregation of public facilities .

talks about how social , political

and economical inequities lead to

current environmental injustice .

’ ,
The children s book New Shoes will be first read as a class to introduce the Jim Crow

,
Laws specifically the injustices of segregation Students will be asked to think about a .
time where the plot and setting of this story might ve occurred in US history and how the ’
,
main character Ella Mae took the situation into her own hands , .

,
Then students will be introduced to the main text Claudette Colvin: Twice Toward Justice , .
,
While we read the story students will be asked to make connections between Ella Mae

from New Shoes and Claudette Colvin .

,
After the main text we will read a biography about Rosa Parks Since Rosa Parks was .
mentioned in Claudette Colvin: Twice Toward Justice due to her contribution to the

,
Montgomery Bus Boycott students will compare and contrast both Claudette Colvin and

.
Rosa Parks Students will find elements from the book that describe how Claudette

Colvin s situation differed from Rosa Parks and why .

,
Lastly we will dive into how racial injustices still occur today even though segregation is

.
illegal The video quickly goes over how people of different political social and economic ,
statuses still continue to face injustices specifically environmental injustices in the United ,
States .

I would start with a children s book that was below the ’ 8th grade reading level because it
introduces segregation and equality through a story and illustrations .

,
The focal text is of a higher level text but the book Claudette Colvin: Twice Toward Justice

mentions many racial and segregational injustices occurring during the Jim Crow Laws not ,
just the Montgomery Bus Boycott .

I chose to give more information about Rosa Parks because she was greatly mentioned in

.
the focal text Not only was Rosa Parks inspired by Claudette Colvin but was greatly ,
,
respected well known and an activist who fought in the Montgomery Bus Boycott For .
,
structure I wanted students to see how well known and respected Rosa Parks is today and

for students to see the major similarities and differences between her and Claudette Colvin .

:
I chose the video Racial Injustice Why We Need to Act Now because I want students to

understand that even though the Jim Crow Laws no longer exists and segregation is now

,
illegal that racial injustices is still very real and we must not stop fighting these injustices ,
,
just like Ella Mae Claudette Colvin and Rosa Parks , .

Representation - This strategy represents the repressed from rights during the Jim Crow
Laws and ties it into current repression of colored Americans .
Interpretation - Interpretations of segregation injustices are done through first person

,
such as Claudette Colvin Ella Mae and Dawone Robinson This provides first person , .
experiences and ways they had to overcome challenges or ways they want to change the

future from injustices .

Multimodalities - This quad text set is taught through the use of a nonfiction novel, fiction
’ ,
children s picturebook online biography and video All literacies help students comprehend .
segregation in the past and current issues .
Standards

.
CCSS ELA -
LITERACY RL . .8.3
Analyze how particular lines of dialogue or incidents in a story or drama propel the action, reveal

aspects of a character, or provoke a decision.

Students will analyze each text and take a part of the text where the character is provoked

into action based on previous experience or knowledge from the story .

:
For example Claudette Colvin was tired of no one fighting for the humiliating rules of the

Montgomery bus system and she was finally provoked to do something about it Rosa Parks .
was inspired by Claudette Colvin to take a stand and not give up her seat for a white citizen .
Ella Mae was tired of not having the same rights as whites and decided to take actions into

,
her own hands create a shoe store where black Americans had the right to try on shoes and

.
buy shoes they liked Dawone Robinson is currently fighting for racial injustices was inspired

him into action through the experiences of racial injustice of his grandparents .

.
CCSS ELA -
LITERACY RL . .8.5
Compare and contrast the structure of two or more texts and analyze how the differing structure

of each text contributes to its meaning and style.

,
For this standard students will compare and contrast all of the texts through a Venn .
, ,
Diagram such as experiences inspirations for action hardships etc , , .
:
Example Claudette Colvin and Rosa Parks were both activists for the Montgomery Bus

. -
Boycott All characters and real life people are inspired through the injustices of segregation .

These texts work together to demonstrate different point of views and treatment of

people during the Jim Crow Laws and how the United States has changed since then The .
book Claudette Colvin: Twice Toward Justice is connected with the biography to Rosa Parks

because she was mentioned many times during the story and contributed to the

. ,
Montgomery Bus Boycott She was also inspired by Claudette Colvin no longer allowing

.
herself and her people to be humiliated by giving up their seat The children s book New ’
Shoes , also demonstrated in first-person how black Americans faced many injustices, such
as segregation , , ,
but it also shows how one person no matter how young can create a

.
change in their community The video is for students to acknowledge that even though

, ’
segregation is now illegal we still haven t eradicated injustices in our country and we must

continue to fight for the rights of all .
