good after noon everyone, hope you all are great & safe at home.

I'm lavanya kalmegh from 3rd

year CT & I'm in favour of the topic, yes "PARADOX OF THE SOCIAL MEDIA SOCIAL
MEDIA IS A THREAT TO HUMANITY"

to understand this we need to understand the concept of “the social media paradox”

In todays world social media is integrated part of our lifes, now due to social media we are able to
communicate with any one out there on social media with internet access, it has made
communication very easy & it is very useful to us as human beings are social animals but now the
question arises what is "the paradox of the social media"…

So here we need to know is Q. what is social media & what was it made for?

Social media is a platform where people can share there views, ideas and opinion from all over
the world and it was made to connect people from all around the world. Now coming to our topic
"paradox of the social media"

where the social media was made to connect peoples, now due to social media we are more
expressive on virtual platform of the social media but less expressive in the real world, Now even
if we go out with our friends and families we get our phones out of our pockets and start scrolling
social media to get that dopamine rush, because in that virtual world we can go from 'cat video' to
'beach photos' just by a single scroll which may look more fun then real world but this is what our
brain shows us, but in the real world our family and friends are whey better then those random
people on social media whom we don't even know

As on social media we get such a huge verity of content just after a scroll our mind becomes
addicted to something interesting for every moment that's what makes us to lose interest in the
same peoples around us and even from our monotonous life.

& This is what most of corporates in silicon valley wants, they wants to target that part of our brain
that crates perpectual habit.

1) Now when you are addicted to their product, they build their revenue model, which is always
the way they does advertisement, and the more they manipulate us the more successful their
business model is…
2) Now there are 3 parties involved in this system
A) company that owns the platform: plays the role of mediator
B) companies/institutions/influencers: pay the mediator to broadcast there thoughts
C) and there is you who is using these platforms

So, one thing is for sure, we are not paying for the social media so we are not the costumers,
and if we are not the costumers we are the products, our thoughts are the products that is being
sold to the companies, till now I don’t have much problem being the part of the system, as a
social media user, as this is probably the best business model. But problem arises when these
platforms starts using AI to store data of
1) What we like
2) Our location
3) What is our qualification
4) What kind of post grabs our attention
5) For how long we see the particular post
6) Our actions are being watched, tracked and measured
& they makes our virtual dummy models that analyses what kind of ads will affect us the
most And what kind of thoughts/ideas are going to change our mindset

Now we have a very powerful tool that can change peoples mindset

-Very important point to note is that these powers are concentrated in the hands of just few tech
giants based in silicon valley

And when these powers fell in the hands of

(i) political institution

(ii) extremists

(iii) or terrorist organisation

The results are catastrophic

We can take the example of

-Myanmar where military spread their propaganda using facebook creating haterate against
Muslims which resulted in mass murders, burning down of whole villages, and mass rapes of
Muslims and according to statics about 7lakh of Muslims had to flee the country

Talking about Russian cyberattack on US

- they divide US citizens in two parts that raised questions which initiates hot debate that turns into
riots, in which many peoples had to lose life and the worst part is these cyberattack are too difficult
to be proved and they have even manipulated the US election by manipulating peoples mind and
this does not even lies under the category of hacking

-many people thinks vaccines do more bad then good

-many people thinks masks might kill them

(and most of the people who follow these thoughts are old US peoples manipulated by social media)

“we are like zombies that are stuck in the perpectual trap laied by these mediators or social
media companies and the worst part is we enjoy being trapped”
So, now how can we prevent negative effects of social media?

According to me the best thing you can do is limiting the usage of social media, as we can’t just
give up social medias

And for that we can take help of tools like

- take help of chrome extingctions

- use search engines that don’t store our history to avoid databreach

-turn off your social media notification

now coming towards Conclusion,

Not being biased I conclude that social media is very useful medium to communicate with people
and is also very good medium of information but considering its negative effects we must minimize
the social media usage.

...thank you.
