4.1. Description of first aid measures

General notes: Remove affected person from further exposure. Always call a doctor to the site of the
accident.

Ingestion:
• rinse the mouth and spit the fluids out,
• lay the casualty down and protect against hypothermia,
• if the patient remains conscious give casualty slowly sip a glass of water,
• conduct further measures as for inhalation.

Skin contact:
• remove contaminated clothing while protecting yourself,
• rinse the affected skin areas for 10 minutes under running water,
• seek medical treatment.

AMMONIA SOLUTION 25 % Date: 10.03.2016.
According to Regulation (EC) No 1907/2006 Revision No. 1
01-04-1-5-5-106/02

Eye contact:
• immediately rinse the affected eye with widely spread lids for 10 minutes under running water whilst
protecting the unimpaired eye. Direct a gentle stream of water into the eyes in order to dilute or
remove the alkaline solution as quickly as possible. Immediate rinsing can prevent serious eye damage,
• immediately transport the casualty to an eye doctor or to hospital. Continue rinsing during transport.

Inhalation:
• lay the casualty down and protect him against hypothermia,
• repeatedly have the casualty deeply breathe a glucocorticoid inhalation spray in or in the case of
breathing difficulties have the casualty inhale oxygen and take up a semi-upright position,
• if the casualty is unconscious but breathing lay him in a stable manner on his side,
• if the casualty has stopped breathing give mouth to nose resuscitation or if this is not possible use
mouth to mouth resuscitation,
• in the case of cardiac arrest (lack of heart beat or pulse) immediately apply heart lung resuscitation,
• the protection of the vital functions (heartbeat and respiration without assistance) takes priority over
every other activity.

Advice to first aid responders:

• if ammonia comes into contact with the eyes thorough specialist care is required after initial first aid
(rinsing, treatment of pain) is completed,
• water is the preferred medium for rinsing the eyes since immediate availability is the deciding
criterion. If available, physiological saline solution or - better - ringer lactate solution or - even better -
BSS (Balanced Salt Solution) may be used for further rinsing. These tear isotonic hypertonic rinsing
solutions are assumed to be effective in preventing edema and epithelial damage. However, for this
purpose they must be used immediately and in reliably sterile form (pay attention to the expiration
date),
• in most cases treatment of the effects of inhalation will be of primary importance,
• following massive inhalation the administration of glucocorticoids (inhalative, i.v.) and oxygen are
indicated,
• codeine may be administered to treat irritative cough,
• under no circumstances should vomiting be induced,
• do not administer active charcoal.

4.2. Most important symptoms and effects, both acute and delayed

Ingestion: painful corrosion of the mouth/throat/esophagus/ stomach/intestines (danger of perforation,

peritonitis!), acute risk also through effects on the respiratory system (spasm, edema, see above) and
cardiovascular reactions (collapse, shock).

Skin: irritation through to corrosion (after exposure to 20 - 25% solution after only a few minutes).

Eyes: the extent of the damage may be apparent only after a latency period: corneal edema, corneal
epithelial damage (often loss of the epithelium), iritis, glaucoma, fixed pupils, cataract, opacity of the
cornea, further irreversible damage (scarring);

Inhalation: irritation to the nose and throat, cough, breathing difficulties, hyperpnea, nausea, later
inflammation of the respiratory passages, possibly asthma-like symptoms; following massive inhalation
danger of glottic edema, laryngo/bronchospasm, reflexive respiratory/cardiac arrest, pulmonary edema,
pneumonia (also as sequela).

4.3. Indication of any immediate medical attention and special treatment needed

Following contact with the eyes/skin: Following large-scale corrosion, treatment for shock, tetanus
prophylaxis and further treatment in hospital may be necessary.

Following massive inhalation: Monitor cardiopulmonary functions and hospitalize the casualty as soon
as possible for further observation and treatment.

Following ingestion of small amounts of the solution: In cases of hypotension, the infusion of full
electrolyte solution and horizontal positioning of the patient are recommended in the first phase. Carry out
prophylaxis for glottic edema with glucocorticoids as soon as possible, also in cases of ingestion; if
necessary intubate via the nose. Hospitalize the patient as soon as possible for further treatment. In
hospital, priority should be given to securing vital functions, treatment of pain, inspection and treatment
of corrosive damage to tissues.
The sucking off of stomach contents by means of a thin flexible gastric tube inserted under sight
conditions is indicated only in isolated cases (possibly after ingestion of large quantities of extremely
dilute solution, if risk of perforation can be excluded.
Dilution therapy following ingestion of large amounts is controversial (slight change in pH values,
increased nausea, increased damage to the tissues due to volume of fluid)

SECTION 5: Firefighting measures

12.1.2 Toxicity to terrestrial organisms

Ammonia applied directly to the soil is rapidly converted to other forms by bacteria in the nitrate cycle.
Exposure of soil macro-organisms is therefore not predicted. Exposure of terrestrial arthropods is
therefore not predicted. Ammonia is used as a component of fertilisers; therefore toxicity to terrestrial
plants is not predicted.

12.1.3 Toxicity to aquatic micro-organisms in sewage treatment systems

Non-toxic.

relevant.

12.2. Persistence and degradability

Abiotic degradation – hydrolisis: In aqueous solution, ammonia is in equilibrium with the ammonium
ion. At environmentally relevant pH values of 5- 8, the predominant form will be NH4+. Hydrolysis is not
predicted.

Biodegradation in water: readily biodegradable.

Biodegradation in soil: Ammonia is rapidly biodegraded in soil by the process of ammonification or

mineralisation.

Phototransformation/photolysis: Photolytic degradation and reaction with photolytically produced

hydroxyl radicals (·OH) in the troposphere are major pathways for the removal of atmospheric ammonia.

12.3. Bioaccumulative potential

The accumulation of ammonia in biota is not considered of importance in the environment as it does not
accumulate in lipid-rich tissues in the same manner as organic chemicals, even though levels of ammonia
in the blood of exposed animals may increase following exposures.

12.4. Mobility in soil

Ammonia is rapidly biodegraded in soil by the process of ammonification or mineralisation.
