25: Cut a 50 Ω T-Line and insert a series 50 Ω resistor followed by a shunt 50 Ω

resistor. Determine the scattering matrix for this 2-port network. Is the network lossless?
Is it reciprocal? Calculate the insertion loss.

Setup: This is very similar to Examples

10.6, 10.7 and 10.8.

Solution:
The circuit (Figure P10.25(a)) is redrawn
in (b) to calculate S11 and S21. Here,

75 − 50 1
S11 = Γ = = = 0.2
75 + 50 5
V2− ⎛ 25 ⎞ ⎛ 1 ⎞⎛ 1 ⎞ ⎛ 2 ⎞
S 21 = + = τ ⎜ ⎟ = ⎜ + 1⎟⎜ ⎟ = ⎜ ⎟
V1 ⎝ 75 ⎠ ⎝ 5 ⎠⎝ 3 ⎠ ⎝ 5 ⎠
S 21 = 0.40

Figure P10.25(c) is used to calculate S22

and S12: Fig. P10.25
Z L = 50 100 = 33.3,
33.3 − 50
S 22 = Γ = = −0.2
33.3 + 50
V1− ⎛ 50 ⎞ ⎛1⎞
S12 = + = τ ⎜ ⎟ = 0.8 ⎜ ⎟ = 0.4
V2 ⎝ 100 ⎠ ⎝2⎠

⎡0.20 0.40 ⎤
So: [S ] = ⎢ ⎥ , and we see by inspection that the scattering matrix is
⎣0.40 −0.20 ⎦
reciprocal. It is also not lossless (summing the squares of any column yields a number
less than one).

Finally, to calculate the insertion loss:

IL21 = −20 log S 21 = −20 log 0.4 = 8dB
