SHAPING THE WAY WE TEACH ENGLISH (QUICK REFERENCE)

Teacher Training Videos

I. General Description of Material:

Shaping the Way We Teach English is a video-based training product for English language
educators. The University of Oregon developed and produced the materials through funding
from the U.S. Department of State's Office of English Language Programs.

These introductory materials are designed for educators in English as a Foreign Language
(EFL) who share the following two goals:

 To build an academic or “pedagogical” foundation in language teaching.


 To improve language teaching classroom practices.

II. What does the material consist of?

a. Training Video Material

 It has 14 modules (topics). Each module comprises a 12-minute video segment with
examples from classrooms and educators around the world. It has an accompanying
training manual (to be found in the Academic Department in your site).
 Each video shows primary level classes, while others are from secondary level and
post-secondary level classes. A variety of teaching styles and cultures are reflected.
 Each video contains a variety of exemplary lessons and activities, taped in
classrooms in the U.S. and overseas in combination with interviews, practical
recommendations, and theoretical background information.
 The videos will be available through the computers (videos) or via Internet links
(youtube.com) or Official Website.

The modules are grouped in the following 4 categories and sub-topics:

c. Exercises & Activities

These videos are accompanied by 2 types of ready made activities:

 "See/Don't See" Viewing Guides – Activity to help identify main ideas of the video
topics. They can be downloaded in pdf form, so students can watch a video
segment and complete it, saying if they saw or not the main topics mentioned.
Teachers can download feedback in the same mode.

 Observation Checklist – Contains classroom observation checklists in pdf form.


Teachers can download them or get copies from the office. Students can be
assigned their completion upon watching video segments. The “Observation
Checklists” are available for modules:

III. Suggestions for use:

a. ICPNA Suggestions:

 You can use the videos for the Recognition Task grade.
 Use the videos to create students’ awareness on a number of different approaches
to language teaching both current and traditional.
 Use the videos to take advantage of an audio-visual medium to enhance
understanding of key teaching skills, and link theory to practice.
 Use the videos as a professional development tool to be used independent of a
trainer.
 Adapt suggestions or techniques from the video to your own educational context.
 Assign students portions of the video to complete “Learning Teaching -
Observation Tasks”.
