You cannot break the horse’s stride once
you leave the box. Your left hand needs to
go down to chase to the cow. Leaving the
box, your left hand should aim toward the
steer’s left horn. If I go toward the left horn,
I can see the left horn the whole time. If
I point to the steer and I get too close, I
won’t be able to see the left horn. If you’re
focusing on the left horn, the right horn will
rope itself.
2
Running to the steer, I’ve got my hips
shifted, and my left hand is pointed to
the cow and my right shoulder is back.
If my left hand was back and pulling on
my horse, that would put my swing and
delivery out of whack. When I deliver,
I need to throw my rope with my hips
squared up. My hips are shifted, but then
my hips square up as I deliver for power.

MANAGING NUTRITION
I’m not working out, but I’m eating
better and doing better about eating at
better times. I’m not drinking as much
beer, and I’m trying to drink a lot of wa-
ter. It’s so hard to eat right when you’re
traveling and aren’t going to the grocery
store, but I’ve had enough meat sticks
and cheese sticks to last me a lifetime this
year. Instead of Red Bull, I’m grabbing
healthier energy drinks or water. These
days, I’m mature enough now to know
what works and what doesn’t and what
needs to be done. I love having a good
time and hanging out with my friends,
but I know that I am not at my best
hungover and running late.
MANAGING PRACTICE
Full disclosure: I could go out there
and have the worst Finals I’ve ever had,
but the little details matter and I’m fo-
cusing on taking care of them. I’m going
to rope less, but every steer I run is going
to be important and on a horse that gives
me a quality throw. When I started, I
wouldn’t have done that. I don’t think
I’m going to practice as hard as previous
years. The most I’m going to run for the
NFR is going to be 40, at most, a day.
And I have two sets of 15 head that I’m
going to rope one set one day and one
the next day. They’re really big, and really
tricky. I used to run 100 and then I’d
have a horse that wasn’t very good, and it
was unrealistic. I want to go with quality
practice and taking care of myself better.

ANALYZING PROGRESS
Using your results to dictate changes in your future preparation.
As this issue of the magazine wraps up,
we’re just getting home from the American

I prepare our horses year-round to be at
the top of our game, I’d be lying if I said
the ARHFA World Championships wasn’t
the Super Bowl of what we’re working
toward day in and day out.
I was super happy with our horses, and
I think, looking back, the mistakes that
were made were by myself or Miles. I hate
to put Miles under that umbrella with me,
but we’re who rode our 10 futurity horses.
They won good there, and the Relentless
Remuda as a whole was very, very strong.
Ultimately, the results dictate what you
need to change in your process. I feel like
we made mistakes, and the mistakes were
made—for the most part—because we
were trying to rope to best showcase our
horses and not to complete the course. It’s
different than performance at a rodeo or
jackpot: It doesn’t matter how your run
looks at a rodeo, so roping at the futurity
is different because, in the back of your

That was a pen of natives and longhorns
mixed together, but it was a good set as a
whole. As the steer broke, I could tell he
was stepping to the right.
c) HORSE:
I’m on a horse that my wife, Brittany, and I
raised—an own daughter of Dash Ta Fame
out of the same mare as our stud, A Guy
With Proof. That little mare will get tight. I
knew I had to be aggressive with my rope
because I just know that mare so well.
d) REACH:
When that steer was going right, I reached
about a coil and slid about another half coil
to make sure I got to the horn tight. I let it
slide before I dallied, so it was about get-
ting enough out there to not lose my rope
so I could get to the horn.
e) CORNER:
That mare is little, but she’s super strong.
g She gets down so much in the corner. I’d
already picked her up, so she’s down on
her butt and I’m about to start pulling the
f steer. I took that steer’s hips away in the
corner, so he cleaned up really good. The
next stride was to get the steer legal, so I
let the mare go from that point, and then
pretty fast I was letting her come around
to face because Double D (Dustin Davis)
heeled him so fast.
g) EYES:
I’m watching the steer. I feel like you have to
be watching the steer in the corner to know
where your next stride will be and if the steer
is cleaning up the way you want. n

“I’ve always had this tendency of losing my space and crowding the steer too much before he turns. I caught
myself in the middle of August reverting back to some bad habits that I thought I had taken care of that I
wouldn’t have to worry about as much anymore. I had to sit down and watch a lot of videos from earlier in the
summer when it felt good. I got to noticing how I wasn’t riding very good shape. Once I addressed that and
went to staying off of them and giving myself a little more space, everything started clicking again.”
