KEEPING YOUR COOL IN THE

NFR PRESSURE COOKER
By Clay O’Brien Cooper with Kendra Santos

T he (Wrangler) National Finals Rodeo is home

of the ultimate pressure in the rodeo game.
For me, pressure was never really about the size
or significance of a competition, though for a
lot of people those things carry the most weight.
At times, I’ve had a wave of pressure hit me at
insignificant competitions, where there wasn’t much money or
prestige on the line. That tells me that pressure is just a mental
equation that hits your mind in the emotional realm.
The first thing pressure provokes is a fearful reaction to what’s
going on. I first encountered that when I started competing as
a little bitty guy going to junior rodeos when I was 8 or 9 years
old. We all need to learn to deal with that, and work through it
so we can do our best and achieve our goals.
It’s helpful when you start competing at a young age, be-
cause you get a lot of practice at handling pressure. When you’re
climbing the ladder at junior rodeos and jackpots, and keep up-
ping the ante at bigger, more prestigious events, you learn how
to press through emotional anxiety and fear, and take pressure

A CRAFTSMAN’S CALLING
Monty Reedy discovered his passion for leather at
an early age, and his commitment to the craft is
evident in every piece he makes. —G.R. Schiavino

A s an 8-year-old, Texas ranch kid, Monty Reedy was sent to a

church camp where the kids crafted leather crosses with their
names stamped on them.
“That was it. I was done,” recalled Reedy, a high school State Fi-

my mom, ‘For Christmas, I want some leather tools,’ and I’ve never
looked back.”

breast callers for a company in Oklahoma. I got paid something silly,

Staying out of your horse’s way to the steer is critical to maintaining the flow of the run.

Over the years teaching roping lessons, I see people use their left hand as balance far too much when PARTNER:

Nobody is pulling on that steer to
stop him as he leaves the chute.
If you’re pulling on your horse
for balance, you’re already at a
disadvantage. If you’re getting rocked
back in the corner of the box in your
horse’s first stride, you need to first
address why that’s happening. Are
you not strong enough in your core?
Should you be holding the horn
with your rein-hand to keep yourself
balanced? Maybe you don’t have the
right weight in the back of the saddle
to begin with. Address how and why.

1
You cannot break the horse’s stride once
you leave the box. Your left hand needs to
go down to chase to the cow. Leaving the
box, your left hand should aim toward the
steer’s left horn. If I go toward the left horn,
I can see the left horn the whole time. If
I point to the steer and I get too close, I
won’t be able to see the left horn. If you’re
focusing on the left horn, the right horn will
rope itself.

2
Running to the steer, I’ve got my hips
shifted, and my left hand is pointed to
the cow and my right shoulder is back.
If my left hand was back and pulling on
my horse, that would put my swing and
delivery out of whack. When I deliver,
I need to throw my rope with my hips
squared up. My hips are shifted, but then
my hips square up as I deliver for power.

good, and that my practices and my routines are setting me up for success.
Sometimes, I don’t get any sleep. But
taking that out, I want to be doing all
I can do to feel good. I do know that
when I feel better, I rope better.

MANAGING NUTRITION
I’m not working out, but I’m eating
better and doing better about eating at
better times. I’m not drinking as much
beer, and I’m trying to drink a lot of wa-
ter. It’s so hard to eat right when you’re
traveling and aren’t going to the grocery
store, but I’ve had enough meat sticks
and cheese sticks to last me a lifetime this
year. Instead of Red Bull, I’m grabbing
healthier energy drinks or water. These
days, I’m mature enough now to know
what works and what doesn’t and what
needs to be done. I love having a good
time and hanging out with my friends,
but I know that I am not at my best
hungover and running late.

MANAGING PRACTICE
Full disclosure: I could go out there
and have the worst Finals I’ve ever had,
but the little details matter and I’m fo-
cusing on taking care of them. I’m going
to rope less, but every steer I run is going
to be important and on a horse that gives
me a quality throw. When I started, I
wouldn’t have done that. I don’t think
I’m going to practice as hard as previous
years. The most I’m going to run for the
NFR is going to be 40, at most, a day.
And I have two sets of 15 head that I’m
going to rope one set one day and one
the next day. They’re really big, and really
tricky. I used to run 100 and then I’d
have a horse that wasn’t very good, and it
was unrealistic. I want to go with quality
practice and taking care of myself better.
There’s no better feeling than knowing

ANALYZING PROGRESS
Using your results to dictate changes in your future preparation.
As this issue of the magazine wraps up,
we’re just getting home from the American
Rope Horse Futurity Association’s World
Championships. While Miles (Baker) and
I prepare our horses year-round to be at
the top of our game, I’d be lying if I said
the ARHFA World Championships wasn’t
the Super Bowl of what we’re working
toward day in and day out.
I was super happy with our horses, and
I think, looking back, the mistakes that
were made were by myself or Miles. I hate
to put Miles under that umbrella with me,
but we’re who rode our 10 futurity horses.
They won good there, and the Relentless
Remuda as a whole was very, very strong.
Ultimately, the results dictate what you
need to change in your process. I feel like
we made mistakes, and the mistakes were
made—for the most part—because we
were trying to rope to best showcase our
horses and not to complete the course. It’s
different than performance at a rodeo or
jackpot: It doesn’t matter how your run
looks at a rodeo, so roping at the futurity
is different because, in the back of your

mind, you’re wanting to rope based on
where the horse is in the run and how he’ll
look when you throw that rope.
The mistakes we made weren’t for a
lack of practice. It had to do with trying

a) HIGH CALL:
We were high call, and third high call made
a really good run right in front of us. We
had to make a good run to win the roping.

b) STEER:
That was a pen of natives and longhorns
mixed together, but it was a good set as a
whole. As the steer broke, I could tell he
was stepping to the right.

c) HORSE:
I’m on a horse that my wife, Brittany, and I
raised—an own daughter of Dash Ta Fame
out of the same mare as our stud, A Guy
With Proof. That little mare will get tight. I
knew I had to be aggressive with my rope
because I just know that mare so well.

d) REACH:
When that steer was going right, I reached
about a coil and slid about another half coil
to make sure I got to the horn tight. I let it
slide before I dallied, so it was about get-
ting enough out there to not lose my rope
so I could get to the horn.

e) CORNER:
That mare is little, but she’s super strong.
g She gets down so much in the corner. I’d
already picked her up, so she’s down on
her butt and I’m about to start pulling the
f steer. I took that steer’s hips away in the
corner, so he cleaned up really good. The
next stride was to get the steer legal, so I
let the mare go from that point, and then
pretty fast I was letting her come around
to face because Double D (Dustin Davis)
heeled him so fast.

f) HANDS AND FEET:

I was riding hard. I knew what was about to
e c come, so I was standing her up with my left
leg, and as soon as I got to the horn I let
her do her deal and bring that steer around.

g) EYES:
I’m watching the steer. I feel like you have to
be watching the steer in the corner to know
where your next stride will be and if the steer
is cleaning up the way you want. n

VEGAS IS RODEO READY FOR RECORD

$13.3 MILLION WRANGLER NATIONAL
FINALS RODEO BY KENDRA SANTOS
As the rodeo world gets set to head back to Vegas after a year away in Texas, the talk of the team roping town
includes some surprise partner pairings, a record $13.3 million payoff, a few first-time finalists and some noticeably
absent NFR regulars. The 2021 Wrangler National Finals Rodeo, which will light up the sold-out Thomas & Mack
Center December 2–11, is about to unfold. If we’ve learned anything since Rodeo’s Super Bowl moved to The
Entertainment Capital of the World, it’s to expect the unexpected. We asked a few of the winningest team ropers
of all time—eight-time World Champs Speed Williams and Rich Skelton, seven-time Champs of the World Jake
Barnes and Clay Cooper, and three-time World Champion Header Tee Woolman—to weigh in on all aspects of
roping for gold buckles in the Thomas & Mack Center, because nobody knows it better.

FAME TOPPED THE PINK The Pink and Ruby Buckles both offer an exclusive, stallion-owner only horse sale. The
BUCKLE SALE IN 2021 FOR Riata Buckle will do the same. But why?
$250,000.
“I don’t think anybody understands the reasoning—why we do the sale in the Pink
Buckle—a lot of people think it’s another way to generate money,” Beus explained. “The
idea is to allow each Pink Buckle and Ruby Buckle stallion owner to have two horses in
the sale, to bring horses that represent their program. It helps them set the value for the
horses throughout the industry. It gives people a feel for the quality and value. It gives
these stallion owners a place to represent their breeding programs. In fact, our sale loses
money because we have an incentive for it that pays out way more than the sale revenue.
But it’s important for us that our stallion owners have a place to show their horses and
establish a value throughout the year.”

RILEY AND BRADY MINOR WINNING RFD-TV’S THE
AMERICAN TOGETHER IN 2017.
IMPULSE PHOTOGRAPHY
When you head or heel for blood, it’s both
tougher and easier. —By Julie Mankin

I n the Thomas & Mack Center this month, Brady Minor is backing
into the box and looking over at someone besides his brother for
the first time in 15 years.
Rewind to September. Imagine, with Riley Minor gutting it out on
crutches at the final rodeo of the season, how badly Brady wanted
to punch his little brother a ticket to Vegas to pay his bills. Or
consider Daniel Green’s choice on day three of the ’96 NFR, when
sudden pericarditis put his big brother in a Vegas hospital for what
looked to be days during their best shot at a world title. Daniel could
have picked up No. 16 that night—Dennis Gatz—and stayed in the
average. Instead, he turned out two nights so his brother could rope
when he healed up.
Blood is thicker than water. But what kind of pressure comes with
that loyalty? And what is it actually like to quit your brother—or to
win the world with him? We talked to several of the best brother
teams in history to get the nitty-gritty.

Glenn and Hazel Motes were beaming,

“I’ve always had this tendency of losing my space and crowding the steer too much before he turns. I caught
myself in the middle of August reverting back to some bad habits that I thought I had taken care of that I
wouldn’t have to worry about as much anymore. I had to sit down and watch a lot of videos from earlier in the
summer when it felt good. I got to noticing how I wasn’t riding very good shape. Once I addressed that and
went to staying off of them and giving myself a little more space, everything started clicking again.”
