in the wake of the chaotic concert that left
eight people dead, all aged between 14 and 27.

solve crimes and that is merely what we
have done here.”
After waiting for Kelly to “leave the
premises”, police arrested him at 11.24pm
on November 2 before heading back to the

they found Cleo awake and playing with toys
in a locked room. “I just saw a little girl sitting
there and didn’t think about anything else
than picking her up,” Detective Senior
Constable Kurt Ford said of the dramatic

information about Kelly has been slow
to be revealed. However, a trail left by the
36-year-old across social media has offered
an insight into his life.
From the confines of his housing
commission home, Kelly created several
Facebook and Instagram accounts for
himself and his imaginary children. He
also appeared to have an obsession with
dolls, particularly Bratz figurines, with
images presumably taken inside his home
revealing children’s toys displayed from
floor to ceiling.
“It goes without saying that it’s very
unusual,” James Ogloff, a professor of

with the toddler reportedly telling
investigators that a “woman” visited Kelly’s
Tonkin Crescent duplex and helped to dress
her and brush her hair during the 18-day
ordeal – prompting suspicion that someone
else might have been involved.
Cleo’s loved ones are also said to be
doing their best to bring a sense of
normality back into the little one’s life and
move on from the harrowing ordeal.
“They’re just trying to get back into routine

2012, the case remains a stubborn mystery. Six

comes from her parents’ nightly ritual of
leaving the porch light on for Joanne.
“There’s 2600 missing loved ones in
Australia,” says Ratcliffe, who was born 14
months after her sister’s disappearance. “And
I’m willing to fight for them and for their
families – and any other little Cleos that
go missing.”
And Ratcliffe will never give up her search
for information in her sister’s case. “I hold on
to hope that we’ll get our answers, to locate
Jo and Kirste, and bury them properly,” says
Ratcliffe, who was in tears when she heard
of Cleo Smith’s rescue. “You can’t really
grieve until you know where they are.”

 S torming onto our TV screens as

Tiffiny Hall made it clear from the
get-go that she doesn’t give in
without a fight. And that has never
been more evident than in the past year. The
37-year-old, who made a name for herself as
a trainer on The Biggest Loser before turning
her attention to her own fitness brand, has
had to contend with what she calls “a real
string of bad luck” – a series of wrist injuries
and surgeries, plus all those lockdowns.
That’s not to mention her shock diagnoses
of chronic fatigue syndrome and postural
orthostatic tachycardia syndrome, which
she opened up about earlier this year. “I’ve
had all kinds of setbacks,” Hall admits.
However, in true Tiffiny form, she hasn’t let
it get her down. Speaking to WHO over Zoom
from her Melbourne home, which she shares
with her radio presenter hubby Ed Kavalee, 42,
and their 4-year-old son Arnold, the fitness
trainer is as positive and optimistic as ever.
“That’s all behind me. I’m feeling really
great now and I just want to be positive and
show people that you can get through without
the excuses,” Hall explains. “I’ve learned some
good lessons through my recovery, and one
of them is that your setbacks are never as
good as your comebacks. And that’s what
I’m hoping I’m doing at the moment – I’m
making a massive comeback.”

because I live with a comedian, so he cracks
a lot of jokes. He’s always upbeat. He’s a very
funny guy, so he sort of kept spirits up. We
had a lot of good fun as a family.

– it’s been full on! But I’ve loved
every minute I’ve had with Ed
and Arnold, and will continue to
prioritise my family like that and
look after myself a lot better.

Heart’ and Céline Dion’s ‘Because You
Loved Me’. The Van Nuys, California native
– who has picked up an Emmy, a Grammy
and a Golden Globe – has formidable lyrical
skills, but it took nerve and tenacity to get
some of her biggest songs on the radio. One
near-nonstarter was Cher’s 1989 single ‘If
I Could Turn Back Time,’ written by Warren
and almost rejected by the legend. “She
hated it,” Warren, 65, recalls over Zoom
from her Hollywood studio. “I went to the
studio and literally got on my knees and
said, ‘I’ll pay for it. If you don’t like it, don’t
use it.’ She agreed. I remember looking at
her in the booth and the look on her face
when she sang the opening line [was] like,
‘You bitch, you were right.’”

Now, 36 years after the release of

is a genre-spanning collection of songs
she wrote, then recruited a slew of A-list
talent (from Dion and Darius Rucker to
John Legend and Maren Morris) to record.
“It’s me being DJ Diane,” Warren says of
the LP, which came out in August. “I’m
curating this record, kind of like what
Mark Ronson and DJ Khaled do.
I thought, ‘Why can’t I do that?’”

with TikTok.

all the things. I just did my first live, and

“Ethical investing is a strategy that sees
you only opting to invest in companies

It’s seen a rise in popularity in recent
years as more people have become aware
that the funds they invest don’t simply
sit idly, but rather it helps these large
corporations make money.
There are no guidelines or established

comes down to your personal values and
what you deem to be acceptable.
“Generally speaking, most people
consider ethical companies to be those that
don’t support unsustainable operations
that harm the environment, as well as
those that don’t contribute to industries
that have negative social impacts like

“Once you know in general terms what
you do and don’t want to invest in, you
can [choose] individual companies on the
ASX (Australian Securities Exchange)
and invest with them or you can opt for
a managed fund, which can make life a
little easier,” says Devine.

etting along with others is
crucial for our everyday
wellbeing. But as much as
most of us try to avoid
personality clashes, there are some
types that seem to thrive on conflict.
Kaz Mitchell, a psychotherapist and
lecturer at the Australian College of Applied
Psychology, says it’s important to recognise
that not everyone is bothered by the same
behaviours. So if you’re feeling triggered, it
could be helpful to examine if there are any
underlying reasons why.
“Most of the time, this is unconsciously
because of people we have come across in
the past,” she explains. “Nevertheless, there
are some common behaviours or attitudes
that do tend to generate significant
challenges for most people.”

OPINIONATED PEOPLE
Mitchell says you can blame social media
for the rise of “know-it-all” behaviour.
“People think that because they have
seen a meme, read an article or ‘done their
own research’ they are a subject matter
expert,” she explains.
It could be someone who is spouting
an opinion without any expert knowledge.
Or they may be a genuine expert who is
unaware of how they are making others feel.
“Both types are likely to be
condescending towards others who
don’t share their opinion,” Mitchell says.
“Overbearing, opinionated attitudes stem
from a need to be in control. If another
person’s viewpoints leave you feeling
intimidated, then you’ll know what I mean.”
The key is to avoid any heated debates.
“As far as possible, empathise with their
fears without colluding with their beliefs,”
she says. “Ask yourself if you really do have
to confront their beliefs. If the answer is yes,

because it is too important to ignore, then

do so with respect.”

exploitative behaviour and arrogance,” says
Mitchell. “Yet often they’re charismatic and
have the ability to fake concern for others.”
“When dealing with a narcissist, it’s
important not to take on a caretaking role
(especially in personal relationships) and
it is essential that you establish clear
boundaries,” she adds. “People in personal
relationships with a narcissist often make
the mistake of trying to ‘fix’ their partner
and turn their focus on caring for their
partner’s needs at the expense of their own.”
Due to their ruthless nature, these
types can thrive in positions of power.
“The best strategy in dealing with a
narcissist, especially in a work
environment, is to have as little contact
with them as possible,” says Mitchell.
“Take a deep breath and try to make
them feel good about themselves without
sacrificing your own values and needs.”

their problems. It can also be helpful to
highlight positive things that the person
is doing, but just as importantly, when

about the things in your own life that make
you happy and you are grateful for.”
“If you have a strong enough
relationship, and the person trusts
your judgment, it may be a good idea
to suggest they see a professional for
help,” adds Mitchell.

ith a new baby and a career
change (all during a global
pandemic, of course), 2021
certainly has been a year
of twists and turns for Ash London. In
September, she became a mum when she
welcomed her beautiful boy Buddy with
hubby Adrian Brine. If that wasn’t enough,
she also made the switch from radio to
The Ash London Podcast, where she delves
into emotional, confronting and often
hilarious topics.
In the first season of her podcast, London
tackles the big questions about motherhood,
with guests including Miranda Kerr and
Liane Moriarty. “I felt the best way to face
the unknown was to garner advice from some
amazing women who have already walked
the path ahead of me,” she says.

What are some of your favourite

moments from the podcast so far?
Miranda Kerr really surprised me with how
beautifully down to earth she is. I loved
hearing about how close she still is with
her friends from primary school back in
Gunnedah – despite the fact that her life
in LA looks very different now! My chat
with [celeb trainer] Tiff Hall was also a
huge eye-opener as she shared some pretty
dark struggles she faced after the birth of
her son. Her honesty and courage definitely
reminded me of the importance of putting
my health at the forefront of my journey
into motherhood.

What has this year taught you about

embracing change?
This was certainly not the pregnancy or
birth I expected! In my mind, my maternity
leave would be spent with my girlfriends

having long lunches and getting manicures.
Instead I spent it locked at home with my
partner slowly getting bigger and more
uncomfortable! The same happened with my
birth. I was diagnosed with pre-eclampsia at
37 weeks and baby had to come out ASAP.
All plans went out the window and off to the
hospital we went. There is no use resisting
change, we just have to embrace whatever
journey unfolds in front of us and do our
best to rise to the challenge.
How did the coronavirus pandemic affect
your pregnancy experience?
Oh, man – how didn’t it affect my pregnancy?
There were lots of negatives, like not being
able to have a babymoon or have my husband
at the scans, but there were also some
positives. We got to spend some really
beautiful time at home alone together as
a family of three (the dog counts!) before
Buddy came along, which was so special.
London’s first bub Buddy has completely
captured her heart, with London describing his
arrival as “pure and utter magic”.
What surprised you with your pregnancy?
I know it sounds obvious but I’ve learned
to love and honour my body. As women,
we spend so much of our lives at war with our
physical bodies. Then to watch
it grow and birth a human being? Wow.
I grew a perfect baby boy with body parts
that I don’t even have! I put on well over
20kg, and I have learned every day to be
grateful for this body, even when it looks
completely different in the mirror. I’m also
surprised at how much one person’s boobs
can change in nine months!
Were there any daily rituals that helped
you stay centred?
Yoga, yoga, yoga! It was the number one
activity that got me through the physical
discomfort and emotional change that
happened during my pregnancy. When
my yoga studio shut down due to COVID
lockdowns we switched to online classes,
which meant sometimes in the comfort of
my home I even did them in the nude. We’ll
keep it our secret!
What’s one thing you’d like to tell
women who are navigating new
motherhood?
Trust yourself and get help! Every woman
I spoke to on this podcast, from politicians
to supermodels, all said that they couldn’t
have done any of it without reaching out
to get assistance from friends and family.
It’s impossible for us as women to do it all
alone – even when we think we’re supposed
to. And secondly, no-one knows your body
or your baby like you. You get to decide how
to parent, and you have to live with your
decisions. So educate yourself properly, but
at the end of the day you’ve got to do what
you know to be right for you and your baby.
What’s next for you?
The Ash London Podcast is expanding
out to include some really incredible
guests in the next season, which should be
fun – especially as I’ll no doubt do a couple
of the interviews with my son on the boob!
The motherhood content will continue,
but I’ll be welcoming all sorts of different
guests onto the show as we do two shows
a week. Of course, the most important
part of life now is raising this little guy.
I’m also very much looking forward to
rescheduling our babymoon, which will
this time actually include our baby!

Pork Belly and

Spring Onion
SERVES 4 PREP 5 MINUTES
COOK 10 MINUTES
INGREDIENTS
500g pork belly, skin removed
2 tbsp vegetable oil
Salt, to season
6 thick spring onions (scallions), cut
into long strips on a sharp diagonal
½ tsp sesame seeds
Lemon wedges, to serve (optional)

METHOD

1 Slice the pork belly across the

grain into 1cm strips, then into

3cm wide pieces.
Heat a wok over a high heat
and add half the oil. Cook the
pork belly in batches by placing
the pieces into the wok in a single
layer for about 3 minutes, so they
brown well on one side. Turn to
brown the other side, but don’t
overcook the pork. Season well
with salt in the wok, then remove
to a plate while cooking the rest

Return all the browned pork
to the wok. Add the spring
onion and toss for about a

minute until just wilted.
Remove to a plate and sprinkle
with the sesame seeds, if
using. Serve with lemon wedges.

SERVES 8 PREP 15 MINUTES
CHILL 4 HOURS 30 MINUTES

INGREDIENTS
600ml thickened soaked in 2 tbsp
(whipping) cream hot water until
1 tin (395g) the water is cool
condensed milk ¼ tsp ground
200ml cardamom
coconut milk 2 mangoes,
½ tsp natural flesh puréed
coconut extract ½ cup (75g)
Large pinch of pistachio kernels,
saffron threads, coarsely crushed

METHOD

1 Whip the cream to firm peaks.

Add the condensed milk and

continue to beat until combined.
Remove a third of the mixture
and combine with the coconut
milk and coconut extract, folding
through until well combined.
Transfer to a loaf (bar) tin lined
with plastic wrap and freeze for

about 30 minutes until slightly set.
While the coconut layer is
freezing, fold the saffron (and
soaking water) through the
remaining cream mixture, along
with the cardamom and puréed
mango. Chill until the coconut
mixture is set, then pour over

the coconut layer.
Freeze for at least 4 hours

When ready to serve, remove
the kulfi from the tin and place
on a serving plate, coconut side
up. Scatter with the pistachios
and slice to serve.

COOK 15 MINUTES
INGREDIENTS
500g dried 2 tbsp
spaghetti doubanjiang
2 eggplants (Sichuan chilli
(aubergines), bean sauce)
cut into 1cm cubes 2 tbsp salted
½ cup (125ml) black beans
olive oil Salt and sugar,
250g minced to season
(ground) beef 4 spring onions
4 garlic cloves, (scallions),
roughly chopped finely sliced

1 tbsp grated 1 tsp ground

fresh ginger Sichuan pepper

METHOD

1 Bring a large pot of water to

the boil and salt it well. Add the
spaghetti and cook according to
the packet directions, but start to
test for doneness about 2 minutes

before it says it will be ready.
While the spaghetti is cooking,
microwave the eggplant

uncovered for about 6 minutes.
Heat a very large frying pan over
a high heat, add the oil, and fry
the eggplant for about 3 minutes
until browned. Add the beef and
continue to fry until browned,

breaking up any lumps as you go.
Move the mixture to one side
of the pan and fry the garlic
and ginger for a minute or two
until lightly browned. Add the
doubanjiang and black beans
and fry until fragrant. Season to
taste with salt and sugar, and mix

When the pasta is al dente,
drain it, but reserve about ¼ cup
(60ml) of the pasta water. Add the
drained spaghetti and the pasta
water to the pan. Toss to combine,
then toss the spring onion through

CHOOSE ACCORDING TO SEASON
In Australia, October is considered the kick-off for
champagne season. However, Ferrari believes it’s an
all-year-round drink, although some styles are better
suited to particular weather than others.
“A blanc de noirs champagne is made with pinot
noir and/or pinot meunier grapes. [It’s] perfect for
winter and autumn and pairs beautifully with comfort
food. A vintage champagne is also richer, and great for
cooler months,” she explains. “Blanc de blancs is made
entirely from chardonnay grape and is, along with rosé
champagne, perfect bubbles for spring and summer
and to pair with seafood.”
HAVE CHAMPAGNE WITH A MEAL
“Most people are surprised to hear that champagne
is the world’s most food-friendly wine, thanks to its
high level of acidity and varying levels of richness,”
says Ferrari. “A vintage champagne pairs with steak,
a demi-sec champagne with spicy food or desserts,
while most champagnes go with French fries or a
cheese platter. So if ever in doubt, go for the bubbles!”

CUE THE CRU
If you don’t know champagne brands, a good indication
of quality is the classification by cru, a status system for
vineyards. Of the 300-plus grape-growing villages in
Champagne, 17 have grand cru (top) status and 44 premier
cru status, which means these 61 villages are considered
to produce the finest grapes for champagne production.
“In other words, if the bottle you are considering
has ‘grand cru’ or ‘premier cru’ on it – pick it up!” advises
Ferrari. “Champagne Duperrey is a perfect example of
champagne made with grapes from a premier cru, and
at $45 per bottle, it’s great value.”
VINTAGES EXPLAINED
According to Ferrari, non-vintages (NV) are a blend of grapes
from different years, and are required to be aged at least 15
months. Also, non-vintages are meant to be enjoyed young
(three to five years) so don’t save it too long.
Vintage champagne has to be 100 per cent made from
grapes of a specific year, and then spend a minimum of
three years ageing in the bottle. Vintages contain only
grapes harvested during a quality year and champagne
houses only tend to declare them approximately every
third year. This style represents less than five per cent of
total champagne production, so expect to see it in the price!
THE BREAKDOWN ON BRUTS
Brut champagne is the most common champagne style,
which means it has very little sugar added (up to 12g
per litre). If you prefer your champagne sweet, go for a
demi-sec (32-50g per litre).

During his 15-year run as the legendary
spy, Daniel Craig has been widely heralded
as the “best 007 ever”. But all good things
must come to an end and the British star,
53, has decided to call it a day.
Playing Bond hasn’t always been easy
for Craig, who filmed 2015’s Spectre with a
broken leg after he injured himself on set.
“I’m over it at the moment. We’re done.
All I want to do is move on,” Craig said at the
time. “If I did another Bond movie, it would
only be for the money,” he declared.
But after wrapping up filming on his
fifth and final movie in the long-running
franchise, the Knives Out star seems to have

They’re three of the biggest actors in Hollywood, so

it’s no surprise that Netflix splashed some serious
cash when producing Red Notice, starring Dwayne
‘The Rock’ Johnson, Gal Gadot and Ryan Reynolds.
The heist action-comedy, which Johnson revealed
last month is “the biggest investment Netflix has
ever made in a film”, is huge in more ways than one.
It follows top FBI profiler John Hartley (Johnson) to
exotic locations around the globe as he attempts
to bring down art thief Sarah Black (Gadot) before
she can pull off a massive heist. However, Hartley
must reluctantly team up with international con
artist Nolan Booth (Reynolds) to do so.
Cue huge stunt scenes and loads of special
effects – familiar territory for all three of the film’s
main stars. “Red Notice was my first ever movie on
Netflix and I wanted to make it historic, massive and
entertaining for the world,” shared Johnson, who
also serves as one of the film’s executive producers.
It’s written by the man behind Dodgeball: A
True Underdog Story, Rawson Marshall Thurber, so
audiences can also expect lots of laughs from the
film – with Reynolds joking in May last year that it
would’ve been finished by now “if we didn’t spend
90 percent of the time d--king around”. He added,
“I’ve known Dwayne for like 15 years, so we spend
most of our time together trying to make each other
laugh, which is a really irresponsible thing to do
with Netflix’s money!”

laughs, but in Apple TV Plus’ new series, the pair take a serious
turn. Based on the popular podcast of the same name, The Shrink
Next Door sees Rudd star as Dr. Isaac “Ike” Herschkopf, a charismatic
psychiatrist who slowly insinuates himself into his wealthy client
Marty Markowitz’s (Ferrell) life, and uses his influence over his
patient for his personal gain. Based on a true story, this chilling
series will have you intrigued from the very first episode.

After several years focusing on their solo works,
Australian siblings Angus and Julia Stone have
reconvened as a duo to release an album, while also
announcing their first live shows together in years.
Life is Strange was released to rapturous reviews
in August and now the ‘Big Jet Plane’ hit makers
are set to headline the sold-out Long Sunset festival
in Queensland next February. “We can’t wait to
head north again and perform as the sun sets and
the night comes alive,” says Julia. “It’s going to
be electric.”
With few live music events having taken place
for the best part of two years, it will be a chance
for fans to hear the new album, which is also the
soundtrack for a video game, from the stage.
“There’s always going to be this common thread
that runs through all our songs,” says Angus, 35, of
the album. “And that is: at the bottom of everything,
there is love. It always comes back to love, and
things coming from within your heart. When all
else fails, love will be the thing that conquers.”
Julia, 37, is more straightforward when it comes
to describing their new work, which includes single
‘Love Song’. “I really like this record because it’s a real
mix of old and new,” she says. “I can hear how, on this
record, we weren’t afraid to try, to follow our noses
and not force any direction that it went. It didn’t
matter that there was a really folky song next to a
really dancy song. I can hear it feeling very free.”
The siblings say they don’t diarise time to work
together in between their solo projects. “Things just
keep happening to bring us back together without
planning,” says Angus. ”It’s almost like the universe
pulling us, calling us back together.”
