Diurnal Flow Pattern Evaluation for Water Supply System
Introduction
Diurnal cycle, as the name suggests is any cycle that follows the rotation of the Earth and occurs
every 24 hours. Diurnal flow pattern is the total amount of water passing from a source during a
24-hour time period. The volume of water passing is measure at a fixed intervals of time for 24
hours. This data is then charted for a clear interpretation of the water demand.

Importance
Understanding diurnal flow pattern gives us a clearer picture about the water demand of a given
area. A collection of diurnal flow data helps us identify water demand pattern. The flow patterns
can identify peak water demand, consumption pattern throughout the day, how demand changes
from day to day, etc. These data are critical in determining how water demand changes with time
and aid engineers and authorities with proper information to meet the water demand for a given
area.

Apparatus Used
 Stop watch

Procedures
1. First of all we visit a pump station and try to understand how it works with all the
components.
2. Understand the water meter, and record the flow data for every 10 min interval.
