1.

Five cities Boston, Orlando, Sacramento, Indiana, and Phoenix each requires 40,000 kilowatt
hours (kWh) of power, and Chicago, Dallas and Miami are capable of producing: 70000, 68000
and 67000 kWh respectively. Assume that transferring 1,000 kWh over 100 miles costs $4.

(a) From where should power be sent to minimize the cost of meeting each city’s demand? Use
the distance data in the file Session 10 Data.xlsx (worksheet Q1) for this question.

(b) Now, suppose the demand for power in each of the five cities goes up to 45000 Kwh each.
Fortunately, a new power station comes up in Utah with a capacity of 25000 KWh. Recalculate
the power distribution arrangement.
2. A bus terminus needs cleaners seven days a week. The number of workers needed each day
for cleaning is shown below:

Monday Tuesday Wednesday Thursday Friday Saturday Sunday

17 13 15 17 9 10 16

For example, 13 workers are needed on Tuesday, 15 workers are needed on Wednesday, and
so on. All cleaning staff work five consecutive days. What is the minimum number of cleaners
the bus terminus can have and still meet its cleaning staff requirements?
3. At a jewellery manufacturing factory four technicians (A, B, C and D) produce three products
(Necklace, Bracelet and Rings). Each month the manufacturer can sell 100 Necklaces, 60
Bracelets and 90 Rings. Technician A can make only Necklaces and Rings. Technician B can
make only Necklaces and Bracelets. Technician C can make only Rings. Technician D can
make only Bracelets. For each unit produced, the products yield the following profit:

Necklace Rs. 600

Bracelet Rs. 400
Ring Rs. 300

Each technician can work up to 130 hours per month. The time (in hours) each technician needs
to manufacture a product is given in the table below:

Product Technician A Technician B Technician C Technician D

Necklace 2 2.5 Cannot do Cannot do
Bracelet Cannot do 3 Cannot do 3.5
Ring 3 Cannot do 4 Cannot do

How can the jewellery manufacturer maximize its monthly profit?

4. A computer accessories manufacturing plant produces mice, keyboards and joysticks. The
per-unit profit, per-unit labour usage, per-unit machine time usage and monthly demand for
each product are given in the following table:

Mice Keyboards Joysticks

Profit / unit (Rs.) 80 110 90
Labour Usage / unit (Hours) 0.2 0.3 0.24
Machine Time / unit (Hours) 0.04 0.055 0.04
Monthly Demand (units) 15,000 29,000 11,000

Each month 13,000 labour hours and 3,000 machine hours are available.

(a) How many units of each product should be produced to maximize the monthly profit?
(b) If the demand for Joysticks is infinite (i.e. unlimited number of Joysticks can be sold)
what will be the new maximum monthly profit?
