Lesson plan

Learning Intention(s): We are learning to debate

SC:
I can write what I already know and what I want to know about debating in a KWL chart

Feedback/Comments

Pace and flow of the lesson is

maintained at an appropriate ✔ good job trying to get the roll happening a bit quicker!
level

Transitions managed well It will be easier to give feedback on this when we are back at school and have actual
lesson transitions!

Engaging lesson maintaining

students attention, interest ✔ You followed the workshop model by hooking students in first - letting them have
and motivation their say first about what they think the picture is about and what's happening. Then
launched into the mini lesson with explicit teaching with no input from kids for 5 -10
minutes.

Getting students to repeat words you are saying e.g. ‘can you say debating’ is a good way
to keep them engaged.

Teacher voice - Get that ‘teacher voice’ happening. With a topic like debating for example,
change your voice to mimic two people having a debate. When trying to explain an
argument, show that stress in your voice about what you might sound like when you're
putting an argument forward. The voice that we use when teaching adds a whole other
level for understanding for kids.

videos - I know it seems funny but include question time. Eg. ‘hmmm… did anyone hear
where there should have been a full stop?’ - provide wait time so students can stop and
think whilst watching the video. Even ‘you did! Well done grade 2’s’.
Videos - exaggerate your voice to keep them engaged. I know this is hard and it feels a bit
‘play school’ but the more animated the better. (e.g. when reading a paragraph with no
full stops - OH MY GOSH I am soooo exhausted I didn't even get a break to stop!!!)

Teacher presence - availability Really good interactions in relation to the content. As the students are coming in make
and openness to students, general chit chat - what was for breakfast, did you watch anything good on TV last night,
general interactions with etc
students

Assessment/data is collected
effectively and is purposeful ✔ KWL charts are great, at school this would be done as a group with you scribing
Clear guidance and direction
provided for students with ✔ Include question time after assigning a task to make sure they are clear on what to
appropriate question time do.
Student engagement and
effort is monitored and ✔ for students that don’t voluntarily engage much e.g. Sergio - give them a longer and
acknowledged more detailed response to their input (that is a really great idea, I can totally see what you
mean by that, thanks for sharing etc).

Constructive and timely Monitor the KWL chart today to see that students are completing it properly.
feedback is given

Effective behaviour
management strategies were ✔ lots of little siblings and cats and all sorts in videos today, this is obviously unique to
implemented remote learning but just something to be aware of and making sure students aren’t
messing about.
Good monitoring of the chat and appropriate use!
