IV. WRITING
Part 1: Read the following extract and use your own words to summarize it. Your summary should
be between 100 and 120 words long.
CORPORATE SOCIAL RESPONSIBILITY
An excellent definition was developed in the 1980s by Norwegian Prime Minister Gro Harlen
Brundtland and used by the World Business Council for Sustainable Development: “Meeting the
needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own
needs.” Nowadays, governments and companies need to account for the social consequences of their
actions. As a result, corporate social responsibility (CSR) has become a priority for business leaders
around the world. When a well-run business applies its vast resources and expertise to social
problems that it understands and in which it has a stake, it can have a greater impact than any other
organization. The notion of license to operate derives from the fact that every company needs tacit or
explicit permission from governments, communities, and numerous other stakeholders to justify CSR
initiatives to improve a company’s image, strengthen its brand, enliven morale and even raise the
value of its stock.
To advance CSR, we must root it in a broad understanding of the interrelationship between a
corporation and society. Successful corporations need a healthy society. Education, health care, and
equal opportunity are essential to a productive workforce. Safe products and working conditions not
only attract customers but lower the internal costs of accidents. Efficient utilization of land, water,
energy, and other natural resources makes business more productive. Good government, the rule of
law, and property rights are essential for efficiency and innovation. Strong regulatory standards
protect both consumers and competitive companies from exploitation. Ultimately, a healthy society
creates expanding demand for business, as more human needs are met and aspirations grow. Any
business that pursues its ends at the expense of the society in which it operates will find its success to
be illusory and ultimately temporary. At the same time, a healthy society needs successful companies.
No social program can rival the business sector when it comes to creating the jobs, wealth, and
innovation that improve standards of living and social conditions over time.
The passage sheds lights on the pressure motivating companies to address corporate social
responsibility (CSR) as well as the reasons which are beneficial to both business and society. Firstly,,
companies and governments today have to explain for their actions on social issues. Therefore, they
consider CSR as the most important factor for their businesses. Once they run companies well and
understand the way combining with variety of skills, they can improve company’s image better than
the other. To motivate CSR, we ought to know the relationship between companies and society.
Successful business need a healthy society because healthy community creates futher requirements
for business and brings education, equal chances,... to the workforce. Inversely, a healthy society
needs successful companies as they also provide jobs, modernization that improve livings and
conditions.

Part 2: The first chart below shows how energy is used in an average Australian household. The
second chart shows the greenhouse gas emissions which result from this energy use.
14
Summarize the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons
where relevant. You should write about 150 words.

The first pie chart compares the percentage of energy consumption in an average Australian
families. Whereas the second chart represents the emission of greenhouse gas from the use of energy.
At the first glance, it is clear that heating accounts for the major using, but the cooling is the
lowest energy use in this statistic. Yet the largest proportion gas emissions belongs to water heating.
In terms of energy use, 42% of energy consumed in an Australian household is used for
heating, which is moderately higher than the proportion of water heating, exactly 30%. The figure for
the other appliances makes up less than a fifth, a tiny fraction including cooling and lighting accounts
for under 5%, which is 2% and 4% respectively.
On the other hand, water heating and the other appliances are the major causes for greenhouse
gas emissions, about 32% and 28%. The percentage of refrigeration and heating are nearly the same,
however, both cooling and lighting are responsible for the production of one in tenth of greenhouse
gas emissions.

Part 3: Write about the following topic:
Young people are much more aware of and concerned about issues like the environment,
poverty, and animal welfare than previous generations. What is your own opinion?
Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own experience.
Write about 350 words.
In ever-changing world today, humans have to deal with a variety of problems including
environmental issues, poor quality of life and even the extinction of many kinds of animals. It is
considered that young adults pay more attention to these problems than their previous generations.
From my perspective, I completely agree with this view.
On the one hand, people nowadays are living in the innovation of internet and technology.
Therefore, it cannot be denied that young people are much easier not only to access to vast amount of
information shared on social media but also ask for help when needed. For example, people who need
help from society will post a status on Facebook so that they can be noticed and taken care of.
Moreover, the convenience of technology also makes adults raise awareness about people in other
parts of the world who are suffering from poverty, shortage of food and water. In contrast, elderly
people are not spending so much time on surfing the internet, so that they will not up to date new
things made by media.
Furthermore, some issues involved in damaging environment, global warming, water
scarcity or food security seem extemely difficult for teenagers to solve. Therefore, they have no
choice but only concern more about them and do small things that are useful to society. For instance,
many environmental protection organizations have been established by young people with a view of
protecting surrounding around us. By collecting rubbish across the beach, planting more trees,
reducing, reusing and recycling, they made great contribution to the protection of environment as
well as the protection of the earth.
In conclusion, children have a little more awareness than the older generations thanks to the
updated science and technology, this will definitely makes adults have more responsibilities to
society and people around them.
