Linear Equation in 2 Variables
The linear function has equation in the form
y = mx + b
where m and b are real numbers.

The number m is the slope of the graph of the function and

the number b is the y-intercept. The sign of m determines the
direction of the graph.
Linear Equation in Two Variables
Properties of a linear functions:

1.The Domain (x) is set of all real numbers (−∞, ∞)

2. The Range(y) is set of all real numbers (−∞, ∞)

3. The zeros (of a linear function) passes through
the x & y intercepts
4. The degree of power is one.

5. The trend of the line depends on m (slope)

Linear Equation in Two Variables
The Slope (m) of a line
If a > 0, then the function is increasing (going up from left
to right) and if a < 0, then the function is decreasing (going
down from left to right ).

If m = 0, then the graph is a

horizontal line or parallel to the
x - axis.

The Graph of y = 3
Linear Equation in Two Variables

The graph of y=−3x−2 The graph of y=2x-1

Word Problems
Many types of real-life mathematical problems can be solved
using a system of linear equations.

Example 1:
A regular movie ticket sold for P500. Senior Citizens and PWD’s
are given discount of 20% and they paid only P400. For the initial
screening, the Cinema company sold 450 tickets and garnered
total of P200,000. Determine each type of ticket were sold.

second. How long is each piece of cable?
3. The Rocket Coaster has 15 cars, some that hold 4 people and some that hold 6
people. There is room for 72 people altogether. How many 4-passenger cars are
there? How many 6-passenger cars are there?
