CHAPTER 4: SYSTEM OF LINEAR EQUATIONS AND INEQUALITIES

Section 4.6,7,8 Solving System of Linear Equations

by Graphing, Substitution and Elimination
OBJECTIVES:
At the end of the lesson, the students will be able to:
 solves problems involving systems of linear equations in two variables by (a) graphing;
(b) substitution; (c) elimination.
INTRODUCTION/ MOTIVATION
Let’s find out how much you already know about this module. Analyze the given examples
below.

Process Question:
1. Differentiate the three methods in solving system of linear equations.

DISCUSSION:
Two Linear Equations in Two Variables
x + y=6
x− y =2

 is called a system of two linear equations in two variables

A system of linear equations in two variables may consist of two or more linear
equations for which values of the variables in the equations involved are determined.

METHODS TO SOLVE SYSTEMS OF EQUATIONS

GRAPHING: graph both of the equations in the same rectangular coordinate system. Find the
solution to the solution to the linear system by locating the point.
Example. Solve the system by graphing.
3 x− y=3
2 x+ y =2

11 | P a g e
Solution: Use the x−¿ and y−¿intercepts of each line in drawing the graphs.
To solve for the y−¿intercept, set x=0
3 x− y=3 ; x=0

3 ( 0 )− y=3 ; y=−3 ( y−¿intercept)

(0 ,−3)

To solve for thex−¿intercept, set y=0

3 x− y=3 ; y=0

3 x−0=3 ; y=−3 (x−¿intercept)

(1 , 0)

For the second equation:

2 x+ y =2 ; x=0

2(0)+ y=2 y=2 ( y−¿intercept)

(0 , 2)

2 x+ y =2; y=0
2 x+ 0=2 x=2 (x−¿intercept)

(1 , 0)

Use the intercepts to graph the given system.

SUBSTITUTION: solve either of the equations for one variable in terms of the other, substitute
the expression into the other equation, solve for that variable and the other variable.
Example. Solve the system by substitution.
Eq. 1 7 x +2 y =7.

Eq. 2 4 x− y=4

Solution:
Of the two equations, the second equation has a variable with 1 as numerical
coefficient. Solve this equation for y.
Eq. 2 4 x− y=4
− y=−4 x +4
y=4 x−4

Next, substitute 4 x−4 for y in Eq. 1 and solve for the remaining variable x.
12 | P a g e
Eq. 1 7 x +2 y =7

7 x +2 ( 4 x−4 )=7

7 x +8 x−8=7
15 x=15
x=1

Finally, substitute x=1 in Eq. 2 to solve for y.

Eq. 2 4 x− y=4
y=4 x−4

y=4 (1)−4
y=4−4
y=0

The solution is the ordered pair (1 , 0)

ELIMINATION: rewrite both equations in the form Ax+ By=C, multiply either equation or both
equations by appropriate nonzero numbers so that the sum of one of the coordinates
coefficients is 0, add the equations and solve for the variable and the other variable.
Example. Solve the system by elimination.
3 x−4 y=12
2 x+ 4 y=3

Note that the coefficients of y in both equations are numerically equal but opposite in
sign. This variable can be eliminated by addition.
3 x−4 y=12
¿
5x ¿ 15

Then, solve for the value of x, the remaining variable.

5 x=15

13 | P a g e
5 x 15
=
5 5
x=3

Finally, solve for the value of the other variable by substituting x=3 in any of the given
equations.
3 x−4 y=12

3(3)−4 y =12
9−4 y=12
−4 y=3
−3
y=
4

3
(
The solution is 3 ,−
