Module 1: RENAISSANCE AND BAROQUE PERIOD


LEARNING COMPETENCY:

3. Identifies representative artists from Renaissance and Baroque periods.
Arts in the Renaissance period covers the artworks produced during the 14 th, 15th and 16th
centuries in Europe.
The word Renaissance came from the word “Renaitre” which means “Rebirth”. It pertains to the
arts particularly in Italy, such as sculpture, painting, music, architecture, and literature.
The most common subject during this period is human philosophy.
Famous Artist of this era were:
1. Michelangelo Di Lodovico Buonarroti Simoni
2. Leonardo di Ser Piero Da Vinci
3. Raffaello Sanzio da Urbino
4. Donato di Niccolo di Betto Bardi
The art of Baroque period are more elaborate and full of emotion. The word Baroque came from
Portuguese word “Barocco” which means “pearl of Irregular shape”. They were developed in
Europe around 1600’s. this type of word were highly encourage by the Catholic Church.
Famous Artist of this era were:
1. Michelangelo Merisi or Amerighi da Caravaggio
2. Gian Lorenzo Bernini
3. Peter Paul Rubens
4. Rembrandt Harmenszoon van Rijn

FAMOUS ARTIST AND ARTWORKS OF RENAISSANCE
A. Michelangelo Di Lodovico Buonarroti Simoni (1475-1564)
- Italian sculptor, painter, architect, and poet
- Considered as one of the greatest artists of all time.
- Among his outstanding artworks as sculptor were the following:
1. Pieta
2. Bacchus
3. Moses
4. David
5. Dying Slave
6. Dawn and Dusk
- the Pieta and David, were sculpted before he turned 30
- he also created two of the most influential works in fresco in the history of Western
Art

B. Leonardo di Ser Piero Da Vinci (1452-1519)


- Was a painter, scientist and mathematician
- He was known as the ultimate “Renaissance Man”
- Popularized in present times through the Novel and movie “Da Vinci Code”
- Considered as one of the greatest artists of all time.
- Among his outstanding artworks as sculptor were the following:
1. The last Supper (most reproduced religious painting of all time)
2. Mona Lisa
3. The Vitruvian Man
4. Adoration of Magi
5. The Virgin of the Rocks

C. Raffaello Sanzio da Urbino (Raphael)
- Italian painter, and architect of the High Renaissance period
- Works were admired due to clarity of form and ease of composition and for its visual
achievement of interpreting the Divine and incorporating Christian doctrines.
- Among his outstanding artworks as sculptor were the following:
1. The Sistine Madonna
2. The School of Athens
3. The transfiguration
- The Transfiguration was Raphael’s last painting which he worked on up to his death.

- One of the Italian greatest artists
- An early Renaissance Sculptor from Florence
- Known for his work in bas-relief
- Among his outstanding artworks as sculptor were the following:
1. David (the first known free-standing nude statue produced since ancient times)

3. Equestrian Monument of Guatemala

- An Italian and the first Baroque artist
- He practiced architecture, and sculpture, painting, stage design and was also a
playwright
- He was also last in the list of the dazzling geniuses.
- The famous “Ecstasy of St. Teresa” was his greatest achievement.

- A Flemish Baroque painter
- Known for his paintings of mythical and figurative subjects, landscapes, portraits, and
counter-reformation altar pieces.

D. Rembrandt Harmenszoon van Rijn


- A Dutch realist, painter and etcher.
- Generally considered as one of the greatest painters and printmakers in European arts.
- He follow no particular faith, but interested in spiritual values and often chooses
religious subjects.
- Well known work was his “Self-Portrait in Old Age”
