Lesson Meant to introduce making goals to the students: why are they important, what makes a goal
Overview: helpful, and provide practice on making goals. This is in the Health POS and an important
self-regulated learner skill. By the end, students should understand “goals can be helpful for
accomplishing tasks.”
GLOs: Life learning choices
SLOs: Students will:
● Define a goal, and recognize that setting goals helps accomplish tasks (L - 1.4)
● Recognize that it takes time and effort to accomplish goals (L - 2.4)
Lesson At the end of the lesson, students will be able to:
Objectives 1. List at least one reason why goals help for accomplishing tasks
2. Recognize that goals need time
3. Establish a goal appropriate for a scenario

● “What other word do you think can describe these promises?”
● Pick 2 - 3 hands
● “Another name for these kinds of promises are goals!”

● Stand up → “I want to be a great person! But what should I do? I’m so
overwhelmed!”
● Be dramatic and raise voice
Learning Activity 1: Goals help to accomplish tasks Discussion (FA)
● “How do you think goals will make me feel? Remember I feel
5 min overwhelmed.”
● Pick 2 - 3 hands
● PPT Slide 1 → Read the goal I made
● “This is VERY important! For my goal to be useful, I need to think about
WHO… WHAT… WHEN…”
o Ask students to identify the who, what, when of my goal
● “I signed here! That means I have to do it now! When we make goals we
make a promise to ourselves to do it.”
● “I said that I’m going to do this everyday. Do you think I can finish this
goal in one morning?”
o Pick 2 - 3 hands
o “Yes! Some goals take time, sometimes A LOT. And that’s okay!
As long as we’re working everyday on them, we are become
awesome people!”
Transition
● “Now we’re going to practice making promises together! Are you guys
ready?!”
Learning Activity 2: Scenario Exercise (Class) Discussion (FA)
Instructions
● “We’re going to read about some friends who need help making goals.
8 min At this table, I’m going to put WHO. At this table, I’m going to put
WHAT. And at this table, I’m going to put WHEN. After we read about
the friend together, if you think you have an idea for either the WHO,
WHAT, or WHEN of a goal, go to those tables!”
Activity
● PPT slide 2 → read the scenario
o “Rick wants to help! Let’s help Rick make a promise so that he
can help his aunt. Remember in the promise, we need a WHO,
WHAT, and WHEN”
o Go to the tables and ask for volunteer answers
● Repeat for PPT slide 3 & 4
Consolidation:

● “Good job, everyone was concentrating very hard!”

● “So today we learned to make promises, and that our promises need a

● “Can we finish our promises in one day?”
