1. Steering column
Various kinds of damage can be caused to steering columns in the event of accidents or driving
conditions similar to accidents. In cases where the steering column shows no external damage it can be
difficult to detect damage. This damage represents an unacceptable risk for the vehicle, since it could
lead to failure of the steering system.
To decide whether the steering column of a vehicle involved in an accident must be replaced or may
continue to be used, the following guidelines are helpful.
The steering column may remain in the vehicle if all the following conditions are met:
No visible damage (breakage, cracks, deformation) to such front-axle parts as steering arms, steering
gear, steering column mountings, steering wheel and airbag unit, wheel rims, wheel bearing housing
(wheel carriers), tie rods, steering shaft or to the points on the body where wheel suspension parts are
bolted on.
No unacceptable rise in torque and no jamming or catching when the steering gear is turned from stop to
stop. When the steering is turned, the front wheels must be free (front axle raised) and, in addition, the
engine must be switched off (pump of power steering undriven).
The steering column does not catch/jam when turned separately without steering gear.
The steering column must be replaced by a new or replacement unit if one of the following points
applies:
Fire damage.
In addition, for vehicles with electrically adjustable steering columns, if the adjustment does not function
perfectly (the axial and/or vertical adjustment time from stop to stop is too long, unusual noises are
heard in this area).
The steering intermediate shaft and/or a universal joint is touching another component or has clearance
of less than 5 mm.
The steering wheel is more than 10° out of line when the marking for steering center position overlaps
steering gear,
tie rods,
steering arms,
spring struts,
wheel carriers,
control arms,
then the steering column must be checked according to the criteria listed above.
The switch for height and fore-and-aft adjustment is located on the bottom of the steering column casing.
3. Press the switch -2- into the trim panel until the clip -1- engages securely.

Information
Before removing the tie rod, always check the tie rod joints on both sides. If a joint does not meet the
test conditions, it must be replaced.
Only if there is no play in the steering can it be set correctly and the operating reliability of the vehicle
can thus be guaranteed.
Test conditions: The vehicle must be standing on its wheels in order to check the tie rod
joints; vehicles with air suspension must be adjusted to maximum ground clearance.
1. 1.1. Check that the dust boots, bellows and joints are working perfectly and have no
leaks.
Turn the wheels to the right and take hold of the tie-rod ball -1- . Get a second
mechanic to turn the steering by moving the steering wheel back and forth slightly.
If you detect a certain amount of play that is not caused by the tie rod joint, the axial joint
between the steering gear and tie rod is worn.
3. 1.3. Check the right tie rod joint.
Turn the wheels to the left and take hold of the tie-rod ball -1- . Get a second
mechanic to turn the steering by moving the steering wheel back and forth slightly.
If you detect a certain amount of play that is not caused by the tie rod joint, the axial joint
between the steering gear and tie rod is worn.
Information
Mark the position of the tie-rod ball on the thread before unscrewing it from the tie rod.
This avoids the need to perform an approximate adjustment of the steering trapeze when reassembling.
Information
After removing the tie rod, the steering track must be adjusted.
2. Loosen the inner clamp -1- on the bellows using suitable pliers.

Information
When topping up or filling in Pentosin, make sure that it does not come into contact with the
coolant hoses. To avoid overflow caused by overfilling, observe the instructions → 4890IN TEST
AND ASSEMBLY WORK ON POWER STEERING .
If coolant hoses come into contact with Pentosin, clean them thoroughly with water
IMMEDIATELY!
1. After fitting the pressure lines, fill steering hydraulics with Pentosin CHF 202 and bleed the
steering system → 4890IN TEST AND ASSEMBLY WORK ON POWER STEERING .
A comprehensive check on all individual parts of the steering gear is not usually feasible due to the
relatively high cost and is not possible using ordinary workshop resources. Instead, consideration must
be given to the condition of other components that are easier to check.
To decide whether the steering gear of a vehicle involved in an accident must be replaced or may
continue to be used, the following guidelines are helpful.
The steering gear may remain in the vehicle if all the following conditions are met:
No visible damage to such front-axle parts as wheel rims, spring struts, wheel carriers, control arms,
steering arms, tie rods, suspension subframe, the steering shaft or to the points on the body where
wheel suspension parts are bolted on.
No impermissible rise in torque and no jamming or catching when the steering gear is turned from stop
to stop. When the steering is turned, the front wheels must be free (front axle raised) and, in addition, the
engine must be switched off (pump of power steering undriven).
The steering gear must be replaced by a new or exchange unit if one of the following points applies:
Steering-gear mountings
Tie rods
Steering arms
Spring struts
Wheel carriers
Control arms
Suspension subframe
If the listed criteria are insufficient for a decision, we recommend that the steering gear be replaced with
a new or exchange unit.
If a workshop's intended exchange of steering gear is refused by a customer or insurer for reasons of
costs, an expert or - if this is impossible abroad, the importer - should be called in at the cost of the
refusing party. If the decision contradicts the guideline, we recommend that a memorandum be drawn up
on the point and that it be countersigned by the expert.
Information
The rack-and-pinion steering gear and power-steering pump must not be repaired or dismantled!
The steering system must be flushed after replacing individual or multiple components. Additional
components must be replaced. → 489729 FLUSHING THE STEERING SYSTEM
If system faults still occur after replacing a component (another component is faulty), the reservoir
does not have to be replaced again.
Damage to the power steering will occur if there is a shortage of oil in the hydraulic system. Even small
leaks can cause the fluid to escape and damage the servo pump as a result of the high oil pressure in
the hydraulic circuit.
Grunt-like noises that can be heard when the steering is locked, or foam formation in the supply tank
indicate a shortage of oil and/or that air has also been sucked in. Before filling the supply tank, any
existing leaks must be eliminated. In this case, the oil level in the supply tank must be checked with the
engine running as well as stopped! If the oil level drops to the bottom of the reservoir or bubbles rise up,
then there is air in the hydraulic system.
Only Pentosin CHF 202 may be used in the reservoir. Pentosin CHF 202 can be ordered using the
following part number: Delivery quantity: 1 liter = 000.043.203.33.
A dipstick with a MIN/MAX marking is mounted on the reservoir cap → Markings on dipstick . The
markings are for a fluid level when the engine is cold (approx. 20 °C)!
Fig 1: Identifying Markings On Dipstick
CAUTION: Increased risk of accidents and material damage if too much Pentosin CHF
202 is filled in or if Pentosin CHF 202 comes into contact with the coolant hoses when filling or topping
up.
It is possible to overfill the system, causing Pentosin CHF 202 to overflow onto coolant hoses
and other components.
→ The engine must be run for approx. 20 seconds prior to the fluid level check. Multiple steering
operations (maneuvering) will change the fluid level in the reservoir. Check the fluid level.
→ If coolant hoses come into contact with Pentosin, clean them thoroughly with water IMMEDIATELY.
Information
A dipstick with MAX-MIN marks is mounted on the cap of the reservoir. They are for a fluid level with a
cold engine (approx. 20°C).
Check the fluid level (Pentosin CHF 202) when the engine is stopped and when it is cold (approx. 20
°C).
The fluid level must be between the MIN and MAX markings → Markings on dipstick .
Fig 2: Identifying Markings On Dipstick
1. Start engine and leave it running at idle speed for approx. 20 seconds. Switch off engine.
2. Open engine cover and the flap of the engine compartment trim panel.
4. Wipe dipstick. Close and then re-open cap. The fluid level must be in the indicated range
(MIN/MAX level at approx. 20 °C). Top up with Pentosin if necessary.
Information
The steering system and PDCC have a shared reservoir. If repairs are carried out on one system, it is
necessary to bleed both systems.
The reservoir must always be replaced if individual or multiple components, such as the tandem
pump, PDCC valve blocks (FA/RA), PDCC anti-roll bars (FA/RA) are replaced.
If system faults still occur after replacing a component (another component is defective), the
reservoir does not have to be replaced again.
1. After installation is complete, raise the vehicle so that the wheels are no longer touching the
ground.
3. Fill reservoir up to the MAX marking, until the level no longer drops.
4. Then turn the steering to the left and to the right. Hold the steering on full lock for approx. 30
seconds on each side until the level no longer drops. Continually check the fluid level and fill to
the MAX marking again if necessary.
5. Lower the vehicle onto its wheels. Briefly start the engine, let it run for approx. 1 second and
add Pentosin again. This procedure causes the fluid level in the reservoir to fall rapidly, so
constantly add more Pentosin CHF 202. The reservoir must not be sucked dry.
6. If the fluid level in the reservoir does not fall any further when the engine is briefly turned over,
start the engine and let it run at idling speed.
7. Turn steering on full lock several times to left and right at idling speed and observe the fluid
level during this procedure (second worker required). If it continues to fall, add fluid until the
level in the reservoir remains constant and no more air bubbles circulate in the reservoir when
the steering wheel is turned.
8. Switch engine off and set the correct fluid level. This must be between the MIN and MAX
markings.
When the correct level has been reached, no air bubbles must be circulating in the reservoir and the
fluid level must no longer drop.
3. Remove cooling fan housing. → 192019 REMOVING AND REINSTALLING COOLING FAN

Information
The following components of the steering system must also be replaced on all vehicles:
Reservoir
Suction hose from reservoir to hydraulic pump (referred to as "suction hose" in the text)
Return line from steering fluid cooler to reservoir (referred to as "return line" in the text)
After replacing components, the steering system must be flushed with approx. 3 - 4 liters of steering
fluid. This will flush impurities, resulting from defective components and/or wear, out of the steering
system. A second mechanic is required for some of the repair work.
Length of hose (shop-made) for return line extension (adopted from the Cayenne)
1. Remove underbody protection and place a suitable container for collecting steering fluid
underneath, e.g. 10-liter canister → 519219 REMOVING AND INSTALLING COVER FOR

2. Disconnect return line at the steering fluid cooler and drain steering fluid.
3. Disconnect return line at the reservoir -4- and remove it completely (Fig 1 shows engine
compartment on the Cayenne as an example).
Fig 1: Identifying Reservoir, Suction Hose And Return Line
4. Fit the hose (shop-made) onto the connection piece for the steering fluid cooler (return).
Information
Use a sufficiently large container to collect steering fluid, e.g. a 10-litre canister.
1. Secure the free end of the hose (shop-made) in the collection container (strong flow of
fluid).
Guide the other end of the hose (shop-made) into the steering fluid collection container.
5. Replace and fit suction hose -3- and reservoir -1- (Fig 2 shows engine compartment on the
Cayenne as an example).

6. Close off connection piece for the return line -4- at the reservoir.
7. Fill the reservoir up to the MAX marking until the fluid level no longer drops.
8. Raise the vehicle until the wheels are no longer touching the floor. Turn the steering fully to the
left and right and hold it at full lock for approx. 30 seconds on each side until the level no
longer drops. Continually check the fluid level and fill to the MAX marking again.
1. 9.1. - Have a can containing approx. 3 - 4 liters of steering fluid ready. First
mechanic continually checks the fluid level in the reservoir and checks that
Pentosin flows safely into the container.
2. 9.2. - Second mechanic sits in the vehicle and starts the engine for max. 1
second following consultation with the first mechanic .
3. 9.3. - Second mechanic must also start turning the steering to the left and right at
full lock on either side.
4. 9.4. - Stop the engine IMMEDIATELY after flushing the system for 1 second! Fill the
can with steering fluid if necessary and check the flow in the collection container
(secure it to prevent it from slipping out!).
5. 9.5. - Check the fluid level in the reservoir and continually top it up each time the
engine is started. Then restart the engine several times following consultation
with the first mechanic until the steering fluid (3 - 4 liters) you are using to flush out the
system has been flushed through.
10. Once the flushing process is complete, remove the hose (shop-made).

Information
The rack-and-pinion steering gear and power-steering pump must not be repaired or dismantled!
The steering system must be flushed after replacing individual or multiple components. Additional
components must be replaced. → 489729 FLUSHING THE STEERING SYSTEM
The reservoir must always be replaced if individual or multiple components, such as the hydraulic
pump, PDCC valve blocks (FA/RA), PDCC anti-roll bars (FA/RA), are replaced (PDCC, not diesel).
If system faults still occur after replacing a component (another component is defective), the
reservoir does not have to be replaced again.
The steering system must be flushed after replacing individual or multiple components. Additional
components must be replaced.
Damage to the power steering will occur if there is a shortage of oil in the hydraulic system. Even small
leaks can cause the hydraulic fluid to escape and damage the servo pump as a result of high oil
pressure occurring in the hydraulic circuit.
Grunt-like noises that can be heard when the steering is locked, or foam formation in the reservoir
indicate a shortage of oil and/or that air has also been sucked in. Before filling the reservoir, any existing
leaks must be eliminated on the suction side. Alternatively, the defective part on the pressure side
should be replaced.
CAUTION: Increased risk of accidents and material damage if too much Pentosin CHF
11S is filled in or if Pentosin CHF 11S comes into contact with the coolant hoses when filling
or topping up.
It is possible to overfill the system, causing Pentosin CHF 11S to overflow onto coolant hoses

NOTE: Risk of material damage if too much Pentosin is used or if Pentosin gets onto the coolant
hoses when filling or topping up.
Observe the following specifications in order to avoid overfilling and thus overflowing.
Before checking the fluid level, run the engine for approx. 20 seconds. Multiple steering
operations (maneuvering) will change the fluid level in the reservoir! Check the fluid
level.
If coolant hoses come into contact with Pentosin, clean them thoroughly with water
IMMEDIATELY.

CAUTION:
Damage can result from Pentosin getting into the surrounding area (e.g. onto the coolant
hoses) when the hydraulic hoses are loosened (opened).
→ Wear protective goggles when carrying out overhead work on lines with Pentosin!
→ If coolant hoses come into contact with Pentosin, clean them thoroughly with water IMMEDIATELY.
Information
