ACTIVITY 1

I. Rewrite the following numbers using the symbol (+) for 100, (- for 10 and (/) for
1.
1. 974 +++++++++-------////
2. 323 +++--///
3. 872 ++++++++-------//
4. 109 +/////////
5. 45 ----/////

II. Convert the following numbers to base 10.

1. 12316
=(1*104)+(2*103)+(3*102)+(1*101)+(6*100)
= 10000 + 2000 + 300 + 10 + 6
= 12316

2. 56716
= (5*104)+(6*103)+(7*102)+(1*101)+(6*100)
= 50000 + 6000 + 700 + 10 + 6
= 56716

3. 9816
= (9*103)+(8*102)+(1*101)+(6*100)
= 9000 + 800 + 10 + 6
= 9816

III. Convert the following numbers to base 16.

1. 123
= (1*162) + (2*161) + (3*160)
= 256 + 32 + 3
= 291
2. 567
= (5*162) + (6*161) + (7*160)
= 1280 + 96 + 7
= 1383

3. 98
= (9*161) + (8*160)
= 144 + 8
= 152

IV. Answer the following precisely and accurately.

1. What numeral system is used if the numbers of votes are tallied on the board
for counting?

Unary numeral system

2. How important is the numeral system in our day to day activities?

The number system is used to count things and to measure fundamental quantities
or physical quantities. It helps individuals understand how the number system works as
well as how numbers connect to one another. Individuals who develop number sense
have access to a variety of mathematical strategies. They understand when to utilize
them and how to adjust them to various situations.

3. Which of type of numeration is more important? Why?

The unary system is crucial for understanding the processing of digital system. It
plays an important role in theoretical computer science. Elias gamma coding, which is
commonly used in data compression, expresses arbitrary-sized numbers by using unary
to indicate the length of a binary numeral.

ACTIVITY 2

I. Write the following numbers in Roman numerals

1. 897 = DCCCXCVII
2. 518 = DXVIII
3. 23, 490 = XXMMMCDXC
4. 813 = DCCCXIII
5. 25,689 = XXVDCLXXXIX
6. 16 = XVI
7. 192, 345 = CXCMMCCCXLV
8. 27 = XXVII
9. 14, 283 = XIVCCLXXXIII
10. 99 = XCIX

II. Convert the following to Hindu – Arabic numerals.

1. XVIII = 18
2. LXXXIX = 89
3. CMV = 905
4. DCCCL = 850
5. MCV = 1,105
6. DDD = Invalid Roman numerals
7. L¯V = 55,000
8. XL = 40
9. C¯LIII = 150,003
10. CMXC = 990

ACTIVITY 3

I. Convert the following to base 10 numerals

1. 111012
= (1*24) + (1*23) + (1*22) + (0*21) + (1*20)
= 16 + 8 + 4 + 0 + 1
= 29

2. 101012
= (1*24) + (0*23) + (1*22) + (0*21) + (1*20)
= 16 + 0 + 4 + 0 + 1
= 21

3. 1100011112
= (1*28)+(1*27)+(0*26)+(0*25)+(0*24)+(1*23)+(1*22)+(1*21)+(1*20)
= 256 + 128 + 0 + 0 + 0 + 8 + 4 + 2 + 1
= 399

4. 10010012
= (1*26) + (0*25) + (0*24) + (1*23) + (0*22) + (0*21) + (1*20)
= 64 + 0 + 0 + 8 + 0 + 0 + 1
= 73
5. 11110102
= (1*26) + (1*25) + (1*24) + (1*23) + (0*22) + (1*21) + (0*20)

I. Convert the following to base 10 numerals.

1. 68B912
= (6*123) + (8*122) + (11*121) + (9*120)
= (6*1728) + (8*144) + (11*12) + (9*1)
= 10368 + 1152 + 132 + 9
= 11661

2. 368212
