Dear Mr. Jenkins

I am writing to complain about my recent holidays in Sydney which was organized by your company.
My wife and I selected a two-week Women Weekly Tour starting on 29 December. Your agency
claimed we would be picked up at the airport and that the hotel was three-star quality. The all-
inclusive price we paid included breakfast and dinner and two excursions.

On arrival at the airport, there was no one to meet us. We were waiting for half an hour and then had
no choice except to take a taxi. This cost $30. The receipt is enclosed.

The hotel was not what I would consider three-stars. The room was dirty: the beds were small and
uncomfortable. The breakfast portions were very small, and the hotel refused to provide us with
dinner. We had to spend some more $500 for extra meals. Again I enclosed our restaurant receipts.
I found it dishonest and unacceptable that your company offered us a tour which doesn’t resemble
the description. I expect to be compensated for all of my extra expenses. The receipts enclosed
worth for a total of $530. In addition, we claim a refund of $100 because the room was not up to be
promised standard.
We expect real action to be done very soon.
Your sincerely
Mr. Imron

c. The impression of holidays in Sydney.
29. Who did Mr. Imron write his letter to?
a. His wife b. Hotel Manager c. Taxi driver d.Travel Agency e. Restaurant Staff

Alfred Bernhard Nobel was a Swedish chemist, engineer, innovator, and ornament manufacturer. He
was the inventor of dynamite. He also owned Bofors, which he had redirected from its previous role
as primarily an iron and steel producer to a major manufacturer of cannons and other ornaments. He
held 355 different patents, dynamite being the most famous. In his last will, he used his enormous
fortune to institute the Nobel Prizes. The synthetic element nobelium was named after him. He was
the third son of Immanuel Nobel and Andriette Ahlsell Nobel. Born in Stockholm on 21 October 1833,
he went with his family to Saint Petersburg in 1842, where his father invented modern plywood. He
studied chemistry with Professor Nikolay Nikolaevich Zinin. When he was 18, he went to United
States to study chemistry for four years and worked for a short period under John Ericsson, who
designed the American Civil War ironclad USS Monitor.

Returning to Sweden with his father after the bankruptcy of his family business, he then devoted
himself to the study of explosives, and especially to the save manufacture and use of nitroglycerine
(discovered in 1847 by Ascanio Sobrero, one of his fellow students under Theophile-Jules Pelouze at
the University of Turin). A big explosion occurred on 2 September 1864 at his factory in Heleneborg in
Stockhol, killing five people. Among them was his younger brother, Emil.
The foundation of the Nobel Prize laid in 1895 when Alfred wrote his last will, leaving much of his

A Javanese Wedding Ceremony

In every culture , e wedding is always an extraordinary event, as it is in Javanese culture.

Traditionally, in Javanese culture, before wedding day the bride is not allowed to see the bridegroom
forb40 days. What a long time. It is called “Pingitan”. What is she supposed to do? The girl,
particularly, has to keep her body and her face in good condition byusing a kind of traditional herbal
powder called “lulur” so that on the wedding day her skin will look bright and soft.

On the day of the “pingitan” , a ceremony called “siraman” is held in which seven elderly relatives
bathe the bride with water full of certain kinds of flowers called “kembang setaman”. Then, she is
dressed up by a “dukun rias” a beautician. A part of the “siraman setaman” water is sent to the
bridegroom for his bath. In the evening, the bride’s family hold the so-called “malam Midodareni”
(the fairy’s night) which is a farewell party for her. It is a symbol of becoming independent before
she leaves home and begins her new life. Many of her friends and relatives will come to the party.
On the wedding day, the bridegroom has to make promises in the “ijab Kabul” ceremony. He
promises that he will be faithful, gentle, and responsible to his wife and family. As in many other
cultures, the bridegroom also has to give a dowry or “mas kawin” to the bride, the value of which
depends on the bridegroom. The richer the bridegroom, the more expensive the “mas kawin”
usually is.

The next day, the bride meets the bridegroom in the ‘temon” ceremony. This time they are
accompanied by their parents and relatives. In the ceremony, the bridegroom will crush an egg with
his right foot. This symbolizes that they will always meet and solve problems together. As a sign of
faithfulness, the bride should kneel down. She washed the bridegroom’s right foot with “kembang
setaman” water and cleans it with small towel. Then, they sit in the bridal couch “pagi-pagi”. This
time, they listen to advice or “ular-ular” given by an elderly man. This part of the ceremony is very
