Rationale Statement-Standard #3

Standard 3 Learning Environments

The teacher works with others to create environments that support individual and collaborative

learning, and that encourage positive social interaction, active engagement in learning, and self-

motivation (New Jersey Professional Standards for Teachers Alignment with InTASC, 2014, p. 4).

Artifact: Observation Discussion – Creating Community in the Virtual Classroom

Date of Completion: November 2021

Course Completed in: EDUC 230-02 Education Field Experience

Rationale Statement:

This artifact is my second observation report during my virtual education field placement. The

observation was a discussion response to a set of questions regarding videos of teachers during a time

of virtual learning. This artifact relates to standard 3.ii.5 “the teacher knows how to use technologies

and how to guide learners to apply them in appropriate, safe, and effective ways” (New Jersey

Professional Standards for Teachers Alignment with InTASC, 2014, p. 4). In this artifact I specifically

describe how the teachers are effectively using technology during a virtual world for educational

purposes. In this artifact I also respond to how the teachers are providing students with cues and

opportunities to use technologies as responses and resources.

Before creating the artifact, during each video viewed, I had handwritten notes of what each

teacher was doing. From these notes, I was able to compare the similarities and differences between the

two teachers; such as how they were tending technologically for the age groups they were working with

and how they created their virtual environment for their students. During the creation of this

observation, I had put myself in the student perspective, from experience during virtual learning, and

had asked myself what made these teachers skills with technology important to the students. I was able

to learn that these teachers acquired skills that made the virtual atmosphere inviting, engaging, and

informative for all students.

This observation is beneficial to me in the future because I can use the skills and tactics these

teachers exemplified if I ever had to teach virtually. In addition, if I ever had to make a “meet the

teacher” slideshow, I am now able to create an effective and interesting slideshow about myself as an

individual and educator. I can also use this in the future to help me create a virtual environment that

includes attention getters and cues to help my future students stay on task.
