Lesson Plan
Subject: Plants
Objectives:
The objective of this lesson is for students to develop an understanding of plants and
their life cycle. Students will learn about parts of a plant, different types of plants,
plant life cycle, instructions on plant life cycle handout, and instructions on a plant
growth experiment. The goal is to inform students about a subject already thought to
be known or informed, and provide an in-depth look into their life cycle.
Procedures:
The teacher will step up into the front of the class and address the class followed by
stating their objective:
In today’s lesson, you will all learn a little more about plants than what you thought
you knew.
Powerpoint:
The teacher will present a Powerpoint on Plants filled with visuals going over:
○ Introducing Topic
○ Parts of a Plant
○ Different types of Plants
○ The General Plant Life Cycle
○ Project procedures
Handout Assignment:
At the end of the lesson, the teacher will describe the handout assignment that
students MUST complete and pass a 3 out of 5 questions in order to participate in the
group experiment, as well as to ensure that students were engaged in the lesson. A
visual will be shown on a separate slide on the assignment as the teacher hands out the
assignment for students to complete. This handout will be about the Plant Life Cycle,
students will label each stage on the visual handouts. If students fail, they will be
given another chance to be re-label and fix the assignment, however if they fail again
the student will NOT be able to participate in the group project experiment.
Group Project Experiment:
Students will be put into partners of 3, chosen randomly. These groups will be given a
sunflower seed to plant and water in assigned flower pots with their group number
labeled on it. Furthermore these students will water, measure, and record plant growth
data. Groups will rotate in watering, measuring, and recording data as well as taking
home their plant to water, as well as record their data at home. Each group will use the
program Excel where students fill out their monthly plant growth progress
(record their data). Plant should complete growth in about 70-100 days. After 100
days, student groups will collaborate in writing a summary about the project talking
about their data on Google Docs. If their plant dies, they will talk about what they
could have done differently.
Materials/Equipment:
The student has a mild learning disability and struggles with a short attention span.
Students with special needs and will have my assistance/supervision in planting their
sunflower seed, measuring, watering their plant, and recording data. The student will receive
modified notes, and a modified handout assignment with half of 2 out of 5 questions already
filled out, having the student fill out the rest. Reiteration and check ins will be sprinkled
throughout the lesson. At the end of the lesson I will privately go over the lesson and touch
over points the student may have not have understood.
