Lesson Idea Name: Different Habitats around us!
Grade Level/Content Area: 3rd grade/Life Science

Content Standard Addressed:

S3L1. Students can talk about the similarities and differences between plants, animals, and habitats.

ISTE Technology Standard Addressed:  What would you like students to know and be
Empowered Learner 1.1.a able to do by the end of this lesson:

goals, develop strategies leveraging types of habitats and animals that are found in

outcomes.

What is the student learning goal(s) for this lesson idea?

Students will be able to identify and explain the different habitats animals live in through the use of
Padlet.

How do you plan to implement this lesson and integrate the technology? Check all that apply:

☐ Teacher-led: There is no student voice and choice in the activities. Students are guided by
teacher direction and expectations. Learning activities are assigned to the
student and mostly practice based.

X Student-Led: Students are given voice and choice in the activities. They may select the topic
of learning and/or determine the tool they will use to meet the learning goal. The
teacher facilitates the learning as the students direct their own learning processes.

Problem-based and/or Publishable: Students are solving problems
and completing projects to demonstrate their learning. Additionally, the projects can be shared
outside of the classroom. (Note: This objective could be reached by displaying the project on the
school’s morning newscast, posting the project to the classroom blog, presenting it to another
class, or publishing via an outside source.)

To begin class, I’ll activate their prior knowledge by asking a question for students to think about. The
question on the Padlet will ask “which animals can you think of that can be found in Georgia?”.
Students may work in pairs to complete the following posts on the Padlet. Students will add their
comments below the post, and this will let me know how much they’ve paid attention to the
environment around them. Students will then move on to an engaging video that talks about the
different habitat’s animals live in. Students will have to pay attention to the different habitats animals
live in. Next, students will pick a region and answer “Why do you believe that animal is being impacted
by their region?  and do you think this is helping keep this animal alive?”. This will give students the
opportunity to collaborate with other peers. Students will then read a short article about habitats. Students
will have to answer, “which habitat have you seen the most in Georgia?” and “name an animal that has a
certain adaptation in Georgia. To test the students’ knowledge, they’ll quiz themselves on Kahoot with 7
questions to answer. Students have the option to play the quiz again with their partner until they have all
the answers right. Lastly, Students will have to post what they’ve learned about today’s lesson before
coming into class. Once everyone has completed their post, I’ll be able to read their responses and
determine whether the learning goal was met.

Managing student learning:

The Padlet that’s being used throughout this lesson helps students become active social learners. The
students will be engaged and actively go through the different activities provided for them to
complete. In my lesson I’ll be using the “every hand up” strategy by providing Kahoot. This will give
me a chance to collect real-time data which can prepare me to adjust instruction according to the
results. I can see an area where most of the class is struggling and focus on the topics that need more
attention. At the end of the lesson I’ll also be using metacognition checks to reflect on the learning
process. The students will reflect on what they’ve learned from the lesson, this will make their
learning more student led.

Universal Design for Learning (UDL):

I think by the learning activities I’ve provided for the students they’ll become engaged throughout the
lesson. This lesson is providing students with a video, article, and quiz all through Padlet. Students
will also find engagement by collaborating with other peers when they’re posting on the Padlet.
They’ll be able to read out different responses and ideas from other classmates. There’re multiple
means of representation of learning that are being used. This is going to provide students a fun way
of learning through the use of technology.
Reflective Practice:
I think students will have a better understanding through the use of Padlet and Kahoot because this
gives them a chance to explore their learning. It’s hard for students to comprehend information with
just a use of pencil and paper. Students could also learn from one other when reading their posts, this
can expand their thinking. I look forward to implementing the Kahoot for students. I think this is a
great way for students to show what they have learned without raising their hands. Overall, I’m
excited to show this lesson to my future students.
