Lesson Idea Name: What’s My Function - Plant Parts

Grade Level/Content Area: First grade, Science

Content Standard Addressed: LS1.A Structure and Function: Plants have different parts (roots,
stems, leaves, flowers, fruits) that help them survive, grow, and produce more plants.
ISTE Technology Standard Addressed: What would you like students to know and be
Empowered Learner – 1.1.c: Students use able to do by the end of this lesson:
technology to seek feedback that informs and I would like my students to be able to learn
improves their practice and to demonstrate their about the different parts of the plant and what
learning in a variety of ways.. they do.

What is the student learning goal(s) for this lesson idea?

I want my students to be able to know the parts of their plant, and to be able to locate them.

How do you plan to implement this lesson and integrate the technology? Check all that apply:

☑ Teacher-led: There is no student voice and choice in the activities. Students are guided by
teacher direction and expectations. Learning activities are assigned to the
student and mostly practice based.

☐ Student-Led: Students are given voice and choice in the activities. They may select the topic
of learning and/or determine the tool they will use to meet the learning goal. The
teacher facilitates the learning as the students direct their own learning processes.

☐ Problem-based and/or Publishable: Students are solving problems
and completing projects to demonstrate their learning. Additionally, the projects can be shared
outside of the classroom. (Note: This objective could be reached by displaying the project on the
school’s morning newscast, posting the project to the classroom blog, presenting it to another
class, or publishing via an outside source.)

Lesson idea implementation: To begin my lesson, I will ask the students how many of them have
wondered about the different functions of a plant. Then they will answer and post their answer.
Next, students will learn all parts of the plants and their function. Next the students will watch a
video about this.
Managing student learning:
I believe the tools for this lesson will be beneficial. The quiz should help students remember each
part of the plant, and the Padlet should help them to navigate. To shift from passive to active

learning, I will set a time limit and when I start playing a song, that will signal to my students that it is
time to move on.
Universal Design for Learning (UDL): This lesson will support the Engagement UDL. It will have the
students engaged, and learning. I believe it is a great tool to increase success. It also allows children
to learn in a more interactive way which I believe will make them excited.
Reflective Practice: I believe this tool will help students understand in a more complex way. They can
watch videos, take quizzes and look at diagrams. These all should contribute to the memorization
and understanding of the different plant functions. I look forward to watching my students faces’
light up when they see that they got a question right when they take their quiz at the end of the
lesson.
