Lesson Idea Name: Let’s learn about Behaviors!

Grade Level/Content Area: 5th Grade science

Content Standard Addressed: S5L2. Obtain, evaluate, and communicate information showing that
some characteristics of organisms are inherited, and other characteristics are acquired.
a. Ask questions to compare and contrast instincts and learned behaviors.
b. Ask questions to compare, and contrast inherited and acquired physical traits.

ISTE Technology Standard Addressed: Students will be able to differentiate between

technology to seek feedback that informs
and improves their practice and to
demonstrate their learning in a variety of
ways.
What is the student learning goal(s) for this lesson idea? This tool should help you as students
learn the difference and be able to tell the difference in Learned behaviors and Inherited behaviors
in animals. This tool should reinforce the knowledge you got from the lesson and act as a review and
summary of the lesson.

How do you plan to implement this lesson and integrate the technology? Check all that apply:

☐ Teacher-led: There is no student voice and choice in the activities. Students are guided by the
teacher's direction and expectations. Learning activities are assigned to the
student and mostly practice based.

X Student-Led: Students are given voice and choice in the activities. They may select the topic
of learning and/or determine the tool they will use to meet the learning goal. The
teacher facilitates the learning as the students direct their own learning processes.

☐ Problem-based (Real world problems) and/or Publishable: Students are solving problems
and completing projects to demonstrate their learning. Additionally, the projects can be shared
outside of the classroom. (Note: This objective could be reached by displaying the project on the
school’s morning newscast, posting the project to the classroom blog, presenting it to another
class, or publishing it via an outside source.)

Lesson idea implementation: The students will start the lesson with a launch on the Padlet where they
answer a few higher order thinking questions to show me what they already know and what they do not
know. Next, they will watch a video to show and introduce the material for the lesson. Then they will record
an audio recording, telling me what they do daily that could be a learned or inherited behavior. Then they will
take the Quizizz at their own pace. This assessment tool will be used to assess the knowledge of the students
and tell me if my students have learned anything from the Padlet and if I need to reteach or expand on any

concepts. Lastly, my stud3nts will complete a short exit ticket. This will just include them telling me two things
they learned from the lesson and any questions they have on the lesson.
Managing student learning: The tool Padlet allows me to make a sequence in which the students
should move through the lesson helping with any confusion and allowing them to do it individually,
as well as having specific links and tools like audio recorders in the app so the students do not have
to leave the cite for the lesson. The tool Quizizz actually has a time limit for each question that is
changeable as well as immediate feedback which allows for me to help them realize why they may
have missed it. It will also have the students answering the questions at their own pace and each
student will not have the same questions at the same time.
Universal Design for Learning (UDL): These tools support representation for multiple reasons. The
Padlet uses differentiated instruction to teach the students as it offers the students multiple
resources to learn the material instead of just catering to auditory learners. Then Quizizz allows the
students to answer the questions at their own pace and speed, it allows the students to each have
the questions and answer choices on their individual screens, helping visually impaired students.
This tool also gives different questions to the students at different times allowing me as the teacher
to walk around and help students as they move along who might struggle.
Reflective Practice: Yes, I do believe this will help my students learn in a different way than just your
average lecture style class. This is because I know that students enjoy doing something different
than normal sometimes and a big part of that is incorporating technology into the lesson. As well as
allowing them to respond in text or audio form allows for students to fully express their thinking in
whatever form they prefer.
