OPLAN SAGIP: READING PROGRAM

“SUCCESS STORY”

O plan SAGIP
(Sistema at Gabay na Interbensiyon
para sa Pagbasa) is a reading program
design to address English reading
difficulties and attain the reading
proficiency of the five frustrated distance
readers aided with
the reading intervention at the comfort of their community advantage initiated and
conducted by Tinagaan Integrated School.
It has always been our utmost desire, as teachers, to bring reading literacy for
the distant readers, that’s why this reading program has been materialized and
crystallized to life.

I. PRE-IMPLEMENTATION PHASE

Teachers of Tinagaan Integrated School being aware of many impediments,

challenges, and concerns regarding the reading problems of the pupils have concluded to
initiate a reading program that will address the problems and uplift the reading literacy of
these frustrated readers. Group conferences such as school learning action cells and
other trainings have paved the way to the emergence of a promising solution which would
also involve the community collaboration and stakeholders’ engagement for the
accomplishment of the noble mission. With their partnership, the participating students
have been given free school supply pack and snacks for their eight-week reading journey.
Truly it is largely one of the greatest blessings to have these stakeholders and community
in Tinagaan Integrated School. A gold card!

II. ACTUAL READING PROGRAM IMPLEMENATION

A. Week 1-4 : The Rebellious Stage
In the first half, the five struggling readers having different characters and
personalities seem to have one characteristic in common. It’s not their difficulty in reading
since it is already diagnosed but because of their reluctancy and timid behavior towards

reading most especially towards the other supervising parents assigned to each reading
session. They can utter the words but very slow up to the point that it exceeds the time
limit and must be continued the other day.
The para-reading teacher observed that the three of those pupils often forgot
about the words when getting reviewed the other day. It is indeed challenging and
troublesome to repeat the same words to be familiarized by the pupils but the emergence
of the television and the audible sound it produce, that has made teaching reading better
and easier.
These four weeks have been labeled and tagged as the rebellious stage which
was remarked by some of the supervising parents. It’s not that they have gotten into
fights or exchanging offensive words to the parents, but it is their incapability to
remember those words for the successive days and repetitive manners. Makes you rebel
yet that is what motivates you to keep going and going.
B. Week 5-8 (The Harvesting Stage)

Prior to the struggles on the first half of the reading program, these remaining
weeks have been branded as the harvesting stage. You reap what you sow! The parents
and volunteers who have planted great efforts have been even more agile and motivated
with the developing power of the learners in their reading performance. The distance
readers have been regularly maintaining an average phase in their reading speed. The
words have been pronounced better. They can comprehend in average percentage.

Testing them again on the pre-test of PHIL-IRI according to their grade level,
they can seem to go on by and sowed average results. Their performance might not be
as high as the independent readers, but their time has come to move onto the
instructional stage.

RECOMMENDATION:
Based on the results upon the conduct of the reading program, the following statements
signify essential points for recommendations.
1. Touching the generous hearts of the stakeholders have been a great impact for a
better mobilization and resources of the educational programs. Their support on
the school plays a very functional and rewarding role for the benefit of the
students.
2. There have been lots of reading materials found online, but several are not
appropriate and efficient for the frustrated readers. Thus, it is better to layout a
reading module which constitutes a step-by-step reading process from a very
basic to a complex one so that there will be a guide in a systematic approach.
3. Teachers during the distribution and retrieval of modules must have this reading
kit to deliver as a part of elevating the reading problems of the pupils most
especially in the lower years.
4. IT IS A MUST to capacitate parents so that they can act as para-teachers on their
students. With the signed consent of our municipal mayor, it is very eligible to

conduct orientation on how to teach the kids right in reading in a systematic. In
this point of time due to the COVID-19 crisis, constant communication is
necessary so

parents must have mobile phones or interconnect with the neighborhood to keep
updated with the teachers’ auditory information.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

It is an overwhelming pleasure and gratitude to the supervising parents and

volunteers who did not disappoint the pupils and did not surrender to the challenges
bestowed upon them. Televisions makes it easier, but it cannot compare to the motivated
and optimistic voices of parents who keeps on repeating the words. We also send our
hearts outs to the stakeholders who greatly solidify their partnership with the school. We
are supercharged and forever grateful for your any forms of consistent support. In this we
persevere more as we in hand in hand commit to the quality education of our pupils. All
great praises to our Lord God for His Providence! Truly, we are one Tinagaan!
