the Department of Education. This initiative is an after school reading program that aims to
bring together all education stakeholders to participate and contribute their time, effort and
resources to help and support the learners with reading incapacity improved their reading
skill and develop their compassion in reading. The school is an institution, which is
responsible in molding the learners into a responsible individual in the society. This is where
one is crafted into a better person, who will be an emblem of the kind of learning center
where he was raised.
Brigada Pagbasa is an initiative to support the Department of Education flagship
program the 3B’s Bawat Bata Bumabasa. It’s aim is for learners to read and to continue to
read even this time of crisis. Gasa Elementary School continuously innovates programs and
projects considering the needs of the students in accordance of school Learning Continuity
Plan. Thus, the project “GASA SA PAGBASA” which means Gaining Academic and
Sufficient Ability to READ) has been flexed and be adaptive, integrative and inclusive to
solve the reading difficulties of slow learners in the New Normal. We intensified the
implementation of a functional reading program to improve the literacy level and enhance the
reading skills of the students.
Based from the Phil-IRI pretest and post-test, we were able to gather data which
shows that there are still struggling readers. This posed a great challenge this school year
wherein face-to-face is allowed but the effects of pandemic especially to the reading skills of
the learners. Thus, the proponent thought of improving reading skills of these identified slow
readers.
The teachers served as the reading coordinators who conducted mapping of learning
with reading difficulties based on the Phil-IRI Pretest. Teachers also conducted mapping of
possible Learning Tutors/Facilitators. In the implementation of this project, we adapt face to
face learning reading following health protocol. Learning reading takes place at a specific
learning space at home and in the community.
In conducting the GASA SA PAGBASA Program, we coordinated with the GPTA
Officials, Purok Leaders some professional and stakeholders with consent of the parents and
with the permission of the Barangay Captain Junard Tunday following the health protocol.
We utilized the “BALSA” as our creativity and innovation. We posted reading materials in
the “Balsa” wherein pupils can read. Learners also have their learning space at home
provided with the reading materials they used in this program. We were all excited including
our learners with because we made our learning easy yet challenging for our learners with
compassion to teach of our stakeholders towards the pupils. All were excited and happy to
share their time and expertise to the learners.
Our Gasa sa Pagbasa Project was successfully implemented with various activities
conducted and the objective of Brigada Pagbasa program Implementation is achieved.
