EFFECTIVENESS OF “BRIGADA PAGBASA” IN ENHANCING THE STUDENTS’

READING COMPREHENSION

RESEARCHERS: Altoveros, Alliah Marie A.

Eusebio, Nicole S.

Fernandez, Apple Joy A.

Lugtu, Mariella Vincel O.

R AREA OF The most necessary outcome of formal education can

A CONCERN: produce learners who can read and understand what they read to

T further enhance their knowledge. Similarly, many researchers had

I pointed out that one of the essential goals of the educational system

O is to increase the reading proficiency of the learners. However,

N reading comprehension is not an easy process, hence an easy skill

A to teach and acquire, so it greatly requires effort for both teachers

L and students.

E Even before the pandemic came, reading comprehension

O has been a problem already in education which poses questions and

F concerns about the education quality here in our country. This

T problem must be addressed and provide solutions for the future of

H the students, our country and image of education in the Philippines.

E PROBLEM Reading is one of the basics where the students learn to

S CONTEXT/ THE comprehend and understand the words and even the sentences they

T SITUATION: read. According to Ma et al. (2016) through reading, one could be

U amused and informed; one can also heighten their knowledge of

D the world. It basically serves as the learners’ foundation to attain a

Y better learning experience. The more a child reads, the higher the

probability that the child’s analysis and higher order thinking skills

will be developed.

Furthermore, Anderson, Hiebert, Scott, & Wilkinson

(2012) stated that reading is a basic life skill. It is a cornerstone for

a child's success in school and, indeed, throughout life, which

basically means that when a child learns to read, they can use it as

long as they live.

The process of understanding what one is reading is known

as reading comprehension. Which means that reading alone is far

different from reading a text with proper pronunciation and

understanding. Someone can read and pronounce a word properly,

but not understand the meaning of it. Duke et al. (2021) stated that

reading comprehension relies on the ability to read most or all of

the words in a text. Word reading is a necessary, although not

sufficient, condition for reading comprehension. However, as

crucial as foundational word-reading and bridging skills are to

reading comprehension, research has shown that they are

insufficient for strong comprehension.

In 2019, the Philippines ranked the lowest among 79

countries in the Program for International Student Assessment

(PISA). Wherein the Filipino students scored 340-point against the

average 487 points in reading comprehension. It is obviously

shown that the Philippines obtained a very low reading

comprehension and according to researchers, learners have poor

comprehension skills because it is clearly shown that they have

difficulties in inferring, predicting outcomes, and grasping the

main idea of the texts (Ancheta 2020).

The results of the PISA 2019 posed questions regarding the

quality of education here in the Philippines. Additionally,

considering the fact that we are currently introduced to a new

modality of teaching and learning due to the pandemic, teaching

reading comprehension is even harder and challenging, since

students as well as teachers were still new with this and in relation

to reading comprehension, teaching how to read and comprehend

is very challenging nowadays.

The Department of Education (DepEd) and teachers must

address these problems and provide interventions and strategies

which can help to enhance the reading comprehension of the

students. As a response to the educational needs in terms of reading

comprehension during the pandemic, World Vision Development

Foundation in partnership with the Department of Education

launched “Brigada Pagbasa”, a movement which seeks to enhance

the reading skills of Filipino students. It is an offshoot of Brigada

Eskwela — an annual schools maintenance activity initiated by

DepEd and done nationwide with the help of various sectors and

individuals who volunteer to do the work, including repairs and

cleanup. Brigada Pagbasa also assists learners from indigent

communities and last-mile schools who are marginalized,

excluded and underprivileged.

The researchers want to shed light on the effectiveness of

the “Brigada Pagbasa” program in enhancing the students’ reading

comprehension at IFL Christian Academy Inc. and make a change

and improvement through creating an action plan as an aid to

enhance the program resulting the students to have better reading

comprehension skills.

PROPOSED IFL Christian Academy Inc. aims high in promoting

STRATEGIES: comprehension. Despite the current situation that we are in today,

the school continuously finds ways in order to reach the learners

to ensure the reading comprehension skills and utilize new ways

of instruction to cope up with the situation that we face.

Before the pandemic came, there were already existing

common issues and problems in schools, one was the reading

comprehension of the learners in the English subject. In this new

normal of education, the concern arises considering the fact that

only parents and elders are the one who cover the responsibility of

the teachers to teach the children. Furthermore, the concerns on

funding solutions to enhance the reading comprehension skills

among learners became more complicated to address due to the

limitations that are brought by the pandemic.

As a response to the issue, the Department of Education in

partnership with World Vision Development Foundation launched

Brigada Pagbasa this year, which aims to promote and enhance

literacy among Filipino students. In relation to this, the researchers

want to know if the implementation of the program obtained its

objective to promote progress in terms of literacy, specifically in

reading comprehension and make an action plan to strengthen the

program.

SOURCE OF In conducting this study, the necessary data will be

DATA: gathered through primary and secondary sources of data. Primary

data is otherwise called raw information, specifically, the

information collected from the first source in a controlled or

uncontrolled situation. As for the primary source of data in this

study, the researchers used a questionnaire via Google forms to

elicit answers from the respondents vital for the research.

Additionally, this research's secondary source of data was

the articles, studies, literature, journals, and books published on the

internet to provide supporting information to the study. The

researchers have examined and thoroughly researched the

available secondary sources on the internet to find relevant

information and data that can be helpful to the current research.

DATA Initially, the researchers will begin the study by creating a letter

GATHERING of permission to conduct a study entitled “Effectiveness of

PROCEDURE: “Brigada Pagbasa” in Enhancing the Students’ Reading

Comprehension” that will be conducted at IFL Christian School

Academy Inc., and its respondents will be the Junior High School

Students.

Then, the researchers will send a letter of request to the

school head which must be signed as noted. After obtaining the

letter of request to the school head, the researchers will request a

letter to the assistant school’s division superintendent to conduct a

permission to research proposal.

In gathering the data, the researchers will utilize self - made

questionnaires that will be answered by selected respondents. The

self – made questionnaires will be validated by 10 MAED teachers.

It is important to mention that we are going to collect data

according to how relevant it can be in the study as well as its

effectiveness.

The data gathered from the researched instruments were

collected and organized according to the answers responded by the

participants.

DATA Through the data gathered by the researchers, the

ANALYSIS: performance level of the students is identified through their

comprehension skills in reading with the use of Brigada Pagbasa.

In order for the researchers to identify it, the researchers will use

the Weighted mean with a five (5) point scale. Weighted mean on

the other hand, is the method/formula we used in order to calculate

the average of the different numbers along with the different levels

of weight., wherein the weight of the data that are not or less

important are being reduced which definitely allows us, the

researchers to gain more material data in order to get a more

significant result which will benefit the research.

However ,research is not complete without treating the data

so therefore the researchers uses the frequency distribution method

as well in order to organized and summarize the data that is set in

order to the frequency of occurrence of each possible outcome .The

frequency of distribution is the method we used in order to come

up in the decision where our hypothesis is being test if it is

accepted or treated as a rejected or null hypothesis where the test

does not identified a consequential relationship between the two.

Action Plan for Developing the Strengthen the Brigada Pagbasa Program

to Enhance the Students’ Reading Comprehension

The plan will be proposed to further develop the students' reading comprehension. This

will be accomplished through planning and preparation of activities, integration of using the

technological platforms in looking for information and publishing their literary documents in the

lessons, quarterly reading festivals, and evaluation of the plan. In this way, the students can

improve their reading comprehension skills and maintain the students' performance during the

situation that we are facing during this pandemic.
