Highlights of the Activity (in narrative or bullet form):

Reading is basically characterized by the translation of symbols, letters into words and
sentences that have meaning to the individual. It is necessary for the learners to be good readers
to be able to cope up with the demands of the academe.

Reading proficiency plays an extremely important factor in learning, therefore it should be

given much emphasis. However, it was found out during the enrollment process that there were
still students who cannot read despite their grade level. The amount of non-reader students was
very alarming and the teaching force of Pangdan National High School, spearheaded by their
school head, Sir Alicio C. Jamin have initiated to conduct interventions to zero-out the number of
non-reader students. With this in mind, the teaching force of Pangdan National High School have
made their intervention which is the PROJECT LETRA.

PROJECT LETRA (Literacy Enhancement through Reading Activities) is a program of the

school that solely focuses to reading remediation and enhancement. This program identifies the
reading level of the students throughout the different grade levels. Furthermore, PROJECT LETRA
aims to zero-out non-readers students and improve their reading level. To make this, the reading
coordinator and the members of the program gave rise to the strategy that will counter the number
of non-readers. The following were the activities conducted by Project LETRA:

The reading coordinator visited each house of the identified students to conduct a
remedial reading.

The reading coordinator and the subject teachers, after visiting the house of the
identified students, found out that the students who fails to submit their activity
sheets were also the same students who were identified as non-readers.

The reading coordinator initiated an activity from Monday to Friday, 8:00- 10:00 AM.
This activity was solely focused on providing reading interventions and enhancing
the reading level of the identified non-readers. Through this activity, each identified
student went to school and was handled by their adviser. Social distancing and
wearing of masks were strictly observed during this activity.

The reading activity doesn’t cease at school, each identified non-reader has also a
follow – up remedial reading at their respective houses and was given reading
materials for them to read.

With these activities, the non-reader students were able to read slowly and were even
categorized now as slow readers, thus showing effectiveness of the activities implemented by
Project LETRA.
