SAN LORENZO ELEMENTARY SCHOOL
CHAPTER 1
RATIONALE
Sharpening and Navigating Language on Reading (SANLOR), is the program for reading
improvement of San Lorenzo Elementary School based upon the Emergent Reading Program
of the Department of Education. Different programs were introduced like Phil-IRI (Philippine
Informal Reading Inventory, DEAR (Drop Everything and Read, ECARP (Every Child is a
Reader, EGRA (Early Grade Reading Assessment) which are tools in identifying the reading
levels of the pupils.
The school started the reading program last June, 2014 which is also called Read Today,
Lead Tomorrow. Reading programs vary but they do have one goal. The inner goal should be
to foster the love of reading and have deep engagement with books at all stages of
development. Children who read regular basis and learn to read at a younger age seem to
have fewer struggles. Young children who have strong, positive relationship with books are
excited and motivated about learning to read. They seem to do so with greater ease and
success. The teachers encourage the children to read aloud because it is the key to instilling
a love of reading. As they listen, they enter into a world of the story, imaginatively
participating in the characters adventures. They develop a strong positive relationship with
books that become a lifelong source of pleasure and meaning.
Many educators consider education necessary to overcome the ill effects of poverty. Schools often
experience difficulties in educating children who live in economically disadvantaged households.
Educational researchers note that relatively few low-income households are able to afford
educational resources that could help create a rich, supportive learning environment in the home.
Families living in poverty are less likely to be able to afford books, computers, encyclopedias, and
other learning resources.
Children in such households often have difficulty matching the academic achievement of more
advantaged children who live in homes and communities that provide greater access to educational
resources. Parents with low incomes typically have lower levels of educational attainment
themselves. These parents often find it difficult to offer their children the same sort of academic
advice and support that wealthier and better-educated parents can provide their own children.
This program focuses on preparing students for the learning experience by developing self-
confidence and the inner drive to succeed. It provides a comprehensive training for
educators, parents, and pupils. The school engages with many activities such as Spelling
Bee, Read-A-Thon, Book Characterization, Story Telling, DEAR (Drop Everything and Read)
and more that could help pupils develop and improve their conversation skills in English
Language.
In line with this, the school would like to make quality education and enable to produce
graduates who are academically competent, thus the program come up with the hope to
respond the problems of San Lorenzo Elementary school pupils reading performance.

OBJECTIVES
CHAPTER III
METHODOLOGY
Reading is a fundamental skill that we all use every single day. It’s no secret that
developing proficient reading skills from a young age is essential not only for
academic success, but for success in all areas and stages of life!
However, reading can be a challenging skill that many students struggle to master.
And as teachers, we want nothing more than to help our students become
comfortable and confident readers.
Reading Programs are numerous and diverse. It includes Pre-Test and Post Test. Through
these, teachers can simply determine pupils who belong to independent, instructional,
frustration and non-reader level in terms of their reading ability. There are phonic games,
whole word reading method, and traditional classroom and tutor-based reading curricula.
The reading programs provide effective solutions to correct the real causes
underlying reading struggles.
Stage 1: We start with finding out the reading ability of the learners by
conducting pre-reading assessment using Phil-IRI passages. The reading level of
the learners would serve as tangible evidence to establish a reading intervention
program.
Stage 2 is categorizing. The teachers will group the learners according to their
reading abilities and be able to have materials according to the reading ability of the
learners. Phil-IRI pre-test will be used to identify the reading profile of the learners.
Stage 3 is Intervention 1. This is the implementation of the Plan of Action. The
teachers will conduct reading remediation, review sessions, the involvement of
parents (PAIR), and the implementation of Drop Everything and Read (DEAR), Dolch
Basic Sight words and PHIL-IRI will be used as tools. Through this, the teachers can
track the progress of the pupils and be able to improve reading instructions.
Stage 4 is Assessment or evaluating the learners’ progress by conducting
reading assessment using teacher-made test to monitor pupils progress vis-a-vis
with the intervention.
Stage 5 is Intervention 2 in which the teachers utilize assessment result and
proceed with the plan of action. This will be done by conducting enhanced reading
remediation scheme using passages, small books, and big books for lower grades
learners.
Stage 6 is The Final Assessment. This is to provide judgment focusing on
leaners improvement and recommendation on how the learners to be treated on the
next level of action. Phil-IRI Post Test will be conducted to identify the outcome of
the learners and be able structure an effective, one-on-one training strategy to build
those cognitive skills necessary for a lifetime of reading success.
CHAPTER IV
ANALYSIS AND INTERPRETATION
San Lorenzo Elementary School teachers found out that to have progress in
reading, the teachers should provide printed reading materials that will help them
read better. Develop basic reading skills such as letter and word identification,
phonemic awareness and completion of sentences. Giving children printed reading
materials lead to more shared reading between parents and children at home. These
materials help the learners express more enjoyment in reading and improve their
reading levels. Parents involvement or Project PAIR also has more significant impact
on children’s performance.
