DEPARTMENT OF EDUCATION
Region IX, Zamboanga Peninsula
DIVISION OF ZAMBOANGA DEL NORTE
LABASON DISTRICT
LAWAGAN ELEMENTARY SCHOOL

According to Bruce Johnson, reading is being able to interpret written symbols and understand printed
material. Like walking and talking, learning to read does not happen all at once, but gradually through
continuous experiences with printed material and reading related activities. This is the reason why the
Department of Education is pursuing a package of policy reforms expected to sustain improved education effort
and one goal is to increase the reading levels of all students from Frustration to Independent Level, which is
done through the Phil-IRI (Philippine Informal Reading Inventory). All classrooms in every school should have
their reading corners aligned with the reading program designed by the division reading/English
coordinators/supervisors.

In our division, we have our ilove2read program, with different named activities every grade level:
Chandelier, APAD, PRC, RTM, AMMOR and PRAUSE. All the printed materials that the teachers are using
must be displayed and seen in the ilove2read corner.

As teacher of a Grade II class, I adapted the APAD (A Paragraph A Day) of the ilove2read program. I
conducted reading remediation with my pupils who could hardly read and even those can read but cannot easily
comprehend. It was easy for me to identify those learners who failed to exhibit/perform a particular domain
because of the Phil-IRI Pretest. My interventions include the intensifying reading by using different visual aids
and printed materials. I also let my identified learners to reread paragraphs and texts everyday for them to attain
reading fluency. I admit I have to take extra effort and develop good rapport to them and will not let them feel
hesitant to approach me. I will encourage them more to participate in reading activities.

Based on the experiences I encounter, I will encourage parents to be a part of Reading Program by
conducting also a seminar for parents within the school level. During classes, I will give ample chance and
encourage pupils to articulate their ideas( ex. story retelling, debate or smart - talking), exert effort to assist the
slow learners, have a peer- tutoring sessions with our Master Teacher, and develop the pupils the ability to
answer why and how questions or HOTS.
