ther Tongue Based-Multilingual Education

The English Language has been a big part in history since the American regime. Americans
introduced education and English has been a part of the classroom experience since then. But
considering the many different cultural minorities and languages we have nationwide, it has been
a proposal by the educators to use the child’s first language and have a basic experience with it
that would provide them a firm foundation for an education in Filipino and English which are the
two major languages of education in the Philippines.

The use of the mother tongue language can attract the pupils to listen to the discussion,
especially orally, for most young school children can’t understand and comprehend the foreign
or English language used for teaching at their young age. Because the percentage in our
population of pupils who are using the English Language as their form of conversation is
minimal, teachers need to use the native tongue first as a medium of instruction among younger
learners.

It is vital that children begin their education in a language they understand. In the video
presentation we watched during the BEC class, studies were conducted in different countries in
Asia and showed that the use of mother tongue as medium of instruction is the most effective
tool to use in order to reach the maximum learning competencies of the pupils. The main purpose
of Mother Tongue Based Multilingual Education (MTB-MLE) is that children must be able to
speak local languages before learning a foreign language so that learning can be simple, easier,
and effective. It is believed that children learn better if they understand the language the teacher
is using in the class for they can learn better in this way, so I agree to educators who are on the
side of MTB-MLE.

Education for All....SHIRNEY NAELGA-ESCABARTE

Education for All: boon or bane?

I would like to share this piece of information I got from the Internet when I browsed on the
topic Education For All or EFA:

Education is a fundamental human right. It is the key to sustainable development and peace and
stability within and among countries, and thus an indispensable means for effective participation
in the societies and economies of the twenty-first century, which are affected by rapid
globalization. Achieving EFA goals should be postponed no longer. The basic learning needs of
all can and must be met as a matter of urgency.

Nostalgia: Revisiting the History of Basic Education

The Filipino is a conglomeration of various races. It seems that this mixture of royal blood is an
identity that makes Filipinos stand out among other races. As a nation, we are proud of our
ancestors who battled against invaders and eventually gained our Independence.

Looking back during the time of the American invasion, it is heartwarming to note that education
then was for everybody. The advocacy was Mass Education.

Schools of Thought...SHIRNEY NAELGA-ESCABARTE

Schools of Thought: Essentialist School and Progressive School

Education makes people easy to lead, simple to govern but impossible to enslave! So goes the
saying…People earn their education through the Essentialist and Progressive School. I have
learned that the former is a type of school characterized by rigid consistency of discipline, all
learners are much the same and its major motivating factor is discipline, and considers freedom
as an outcome not a means of education.

School Curriculum.... SHIRNEY NAELGA-ESCABARTE

The School Curriculum Full Implementation: Determinant for a Progressive and Productive
School System

When I was in my elementary days, I was always voted President in our classes. But contrary to
fact, I never dreamt of becoming a leader. I was an aloof and insecure type of person. I don’t
know why, but I was who I was and now, I gradually come out of my shell and has already
started to share what I learned and what I earned in my elementary, secondary and collegiate
education.

Opening a New School...Kristina R. Lumictin

It’s not that easy to open a new school. A person who plans to open a new one must consider
many factors, money, and consequences. At first, one must start from the very beginning where
the entire tasks are performed by only few people. If the number of enrolees will increase, then
that’s the time when the school starts progressing.
Most of the time, the principal has been the person who will be given multiple tasks.

The Role of School Principal... R. Lumictin

The different areas covered by the role of the principal include teacher evaluation, leadership,
student discipline, and many others. A good principal can perform its role and works hard for the
benefit of all its constituents. He or she serves as a school leader, student discipline, and teacher
evaluator.

BEC: The National Standards ....Kristina R. Lumictin

The Basic Education curriculum is indeed a national standard. A teacher needs to adjust to the
curriculum depending on the availability of the learners. The country implements this national
curriculum. This can be made relevant to the specific needs of the learners. The department of
Education has given the school principals to implement the BEC in the classroom. This should
be the basis of what and when to teach a particular lesson in a particular level.

Essentialism VS. Progressivism....Kristina R. Lumictin

Essentialism and progressivism have few similarities and many more differences Essentialism is
structured, focused on accountability and meeting standards. Progressivism is child-centered,
encourages active learning, and realizes that education is not just a preparation for life. While
both of these education theories seem to be completely opposite, they have a few similarities.
Both of these theories want the children to succeed, they are just going in different ways to
accomplish this.

Mother Tongue –Based Education ... by Mel Palima

The use of mother tongue as the language of learning and instruction is an innovative approach
by the Department of Education. In this process, students will develop a strong foundation of
learning, be it in oral or written form. As per observation, learners nowadays find it hard to
express ideas direct in English language. Most of them have prior knowledge but could hardly
express considering the grammatical aspects of it.
