I. ESSAY
1. Who was Antonio Pigafetta?
ANSWER:
Antonio Pigafetta was an Italian nobleman, cartographer, geographer and
navigator, who was commissioned by the King of Spain to be the chronicler for
Magellan’s voyage to the Spice Islands. His chronicles about the voyage of
Magellan, serves as one of the most important primary sources in the study of the
precolonial Philippines.

2. What was Pigafetta’s book over about?


ANSWER:
Pigafetta’s book, “The First Voyage Around the World by MAgellan”, is a
chronicled and documented account of Magellan’s fleet voyage around the world
from Pigafetta’s perspective, especially the events that led to his arrival,
subsequent demise and departure in the Philippine islands. It now serves as the
foremost primary source for the precolonial history of the Philippines.

3. Where are these islands (Landrones islands) located?


ANSWER:
Ladrones Islands, or “Island of the Thieves” is now the present-day islands
of Marianas, located south-southeast of Japan, west-southwest of Hawaii, north of
New Guinea and east of the Philippines.

4. Magellan realized that the men were reasonable and welcomed them
with food, drinks, and gifts. In turn, what did the natives give
them?
ANSWER:
With Magellan welcoming the natives with food, drinks and gifts, the natives
responded in kind an in turn offered Magellan and his men fish, palm wine (uraca),
figs, two cochos (coconut-like fruit), rice (umai), cocos and other food supplies.
5. What did Magellan ask for from the King of balangay after he had
just declined the king’s offer?
ANSWER:
After declining the King’s offer of gold and ginger, Magellan asked for
money for the needs of his ships. The King responded by giving Magellan food
provisions.

6. After the King of balangay gave Magellan the things he needed, what
did Magellan exchange?
ANSWER:
In exchange for the food provisions, he received from the King, Magellan
sent Turkish robes, a red cap, knives and mirrors. He also showed the king his
men’s armor, weapons, artilleries, charts and maps.

7. When the king heard of Magellan’s plan of presiding a Mass by the


shore, what did he send and do?
ANSWER:
Coinciding with Easter Sunday, Magellan conducted a mass by the shore
and the King sent two dead pigs as gifts and together with his brother, a king of
another island, they attend the mass and participated in kneeling adoration of the
Lord. This would serve as the first recorded Catholic Mass in the Philippines.

8. What was Magellan’s explanation as to why the cross would be


beneficial for the people?
ANSWER:
The cross would serve as a reminder and mark that the Spaniards have
already been in this land and would not threaten and cause problems for the
natives here. Also, the Spanish would know to release their captives, for the
natives do not bring harm to them.

9. What was Magellan’s instructions to the king of Cebu before the


battle?
ANSWER:
Before the battle against Lapu-Lapu, though greatly outnumbered,
Magellan ordered the King of Cebu to not join the battle and watch how the
Spaniards fight from the safety of his balangay.
10. What is the importance of the first voyage around the world by
Magellan?
ANSWER:
First, it answered the age-old debate on whether the Earth was
circumnavigable or not. The first circumnavigation of the world led to other
European sailors exploring new routes and islands in the East. Also, this
explorations’ chronicles became the first-hand sources on the previously
unrecorded and undocumented precolonial history, of not only the Philippines but
other islands in the so-called “East Indies”.
This voyages also hastened the exchange of ideas and goods from two
different sides of the world, with the East Asian side learning about European
technology and the Europeans learning about the riches and unique culture of the
Asians.

1. What is arguably the most important organization formed in the
Philippine history?
ANSWER:
KKK or “The Kataastaasan, Kagalanggalang Katipunan ng mga Anak ng
Bayan” or “Katipunan” for short is arguably the most important organization in
Philippine history.

2. What did the Ilustrados (Pilar, Jaena, and Ruzal) demand through
their propaganda movements?
ANSWER:
Unlike the KKK who is pushing for total independence from Spanish rule,
the ilustrados demanded for the Filipinos to have equal rights, representation and
protection from the abuses of the friars.

3. What is the greatest contribution of KKK to our country?


ANSWER:
Before the KKK was established, the idea of a unified opposing front against
the Spaniards was largely absent for localized revolutions only cared abut their
specific regions. The establishment of a united Filipino nation revolting against the
occupying Spaniards for the total independence of the Philippines is the greatest
contribution of the KKK to our country.
4. What is the different perspective between Bonifacio and Rizal about
fighting the Spaniards?
ANSWER:
Bonifacio and his KKK wanted an armed front against the Spaniards for the
total abolishment of Spanish rule and the independence of the Philippines.
Meanwhile, Rizal, together with other ilustrados, initiated propaganda movements
that would force Spaniards to recognize the Filipinos as equals, protected from
oppression and given the rights for representation.

5. What are the two classifications of the rules in the Kartilya?


ANSWER:
The rules in the Kartilya can be classified into two, first, that would make the
member an upright individual and second, that would guide the way he treats his
fellow men.

6. What is the purpose of the Kartilya ng Katipunan?


ANSWER:
The Kartilya served as the Katipunan’s Code of Conduct. Containing 14
rules that instructs the way a Katipunero should behave and the specific values he
should uphold, it sheds light on the values, ideals, aspirations and ideology of the
KKK.
