contains training materials for and activities for you to complete.
The unit of competency “Produce Organic Fertilizer” contained the
knowledge and skills and attitudes required for Organic Agriculture
Production. It is one of the specialized modules at National Certificate Level
II (NC II).
You are required to do through a series of learning activities in order
to complete each learning outcomes of the module. In each learning outcome
there are Instruction Sheets to help you better understand the required
activities. Follow these activities on your own and answer the self-check at
the end of each learning outcome. You may remove a blank answer sheet at
the end of each module to write your answers for each self-check. If you
have questions, don’t hesitate to ask your facilitator for assistance.

Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL)

You may already have some or most of the knowledge and skills
covered in this learners guide because you have:

 Been working for some time

 Already completed training in this area
If you can demonstrate to your trainer that you are competent in a
particular outcome, you don’t have to do the same training again. Talk to
your trainer about having them formally recognized. If you have a
qualification or certificate of competence from previous training, show it to
your trainer. If the skills you acquired are still current and relevant to the
unit/s of competency they may become part of evidence you can present to
RPL. If you are not sure about the currency of your skills discuss this with
your trainer.
After completing this module ask your trainer to assess your
competency. Result of your assessment will be recorded in your competency
profile. All the learning activities are designed for you to complete at your

After reading this INFORMATION SHEET, YOU MUST be able to:
1. Define Organic Fertilizer
2. Determine the characteristics of a good composting site.
3. List down the different Organic Fertilizer
4. Distinguish the advantages of Organic Fertilizer over Chemical-
based
fertilizer

INTRODUCTION
Organic Fertilizer refers to a
materials indigenously from plants and
animals added to soil for plant growth. Any
fertilizer product of plant and/or animal
origin like animal manures, green
manures, compost that has undergone
decomposition through biological, chemical
and or any process as long as the original
materials are no longer recognizable, soil-
like in texture and free from plant or
animal pathogens.

Important Elements Present in an Organic Fertilizer

 Macro-Elements
 Primary Macro-Nutrients NPK (Nitrogen, Phosphorus,
Potassium)
 Secondary Macro-Nutrients – Calcium, Magnesium, Sulfur

 Micro-Elements
 Manganese
 Aluminum
 Copper
 Molybdenum
 Zinc
 Iron
 Boron
Organically derived materials available to
industry such as sewage sludge may not be
acceptable components of organic farming
and gardening, because of factors ranging
from residual contaminants to public
perception. On the other hand, marketed
"organic fertilizers" may include, and
promote, processed organics because the
materials have consumer appeal. No matter
the definition nor composition, most of these
products contain less-concentrated nutrients,
and the nutrients are not as easily quantified.
They can offer soil-building advantages as well as be appealing to those who
are trying to farm / garden more "naturally".

 Carbonized Rice hull (CRH) is

made from incomplete or partial
burning of rice hull.
 It is porous bulky with uniform
intact black particles.
 It contains phosphorous (P),
Potassium (K), calcium (Ca),
magnesium (Mg), and
micronutrients vital to growing
crops.
 Because it is sterilized, it is free
from disease organism

Mud balls

 Can be used for waste water

treatment especially for the sludge

Bokashi

 Mainly used for agriculture as

organic fertilizer
 Easily produced on a large scale
compared to the anaerobic type

Vermicast/Vermicompost

 Relies on hungry worms to break

down farm waste into a very
nutrient rich fertilizer for plant
 Casting often called “Black Gold”
looks like dark, rich coffee grounds
 AUXIN- naturally occurring growth
hormone is present in the casting

 Vermi castings contain more

nutrients than conventional
compost
 Sanitary and odorless if done

Compost

 Is a mixture of ingredients used to

fertilize and improve the soil. It is
commonly prepared by
decomposing plant and food waste
and recycling organic materials.

Composting

 Is a natural Process of recycling organic matters, such as leaves and

food scraps, into a valuable fertilizer that can enrich soil and plants.
Composting is a straight forward process that can be accomplished by
anyone with small patch of outdoor space. Composting allows divert
your kitchen scraps and yard waste from landfill, instead of turning
them into a rich soil amendment.

Benefits of Composting

 Supports healthy soil structure and plant growth

 Eliminates the need of chemical based fertilizers by serving as a home
made organic fertilizer
 Improve soil structure through the addition of carbon and provide
plants nutrients
 Enriches soil, helping retain moisture and suppress plant diseases
and pests
 Encourages the production of beneficial bacteria and fungi that break
down organic matter to create humus

How to make Compost Fertilizer?

Materials:
 Crop residue
 Animal manure
 Leguminous plant
 Kitchen waste

1. Choose a site for your compost. You should consider choosing an area
with minimum sunlight, Area with minimum contamination,
Availability of water supply, Proximity to the source of raw materials,
Accessibility of the composting site and a good drainage system

2. Determine recommended size for compost. 2m length x 1.5m width
and 60 cm height
3. Add your compost raw materials in layers. Pile Kitchen waste, Crop
residue and leguminous plants
4. Incorporate manure as a source of nitrogen so your compost could be
activated and the composting process could be sped up
5. Keep your pile moist, make sure keep the compost pile moist. Do
some occasional watering
6. Turn your compost pile. Give your compost pile a turn every few
weeks using a pitchfork. Doing so generates oxygen into your compost
pile, which can aid in aerating your compost and increasing the
composting process.

Characteristic of a good composting site

 Good drainage system

 Availability of water supply
 Proximity to the source of raw materials
 Accessibility of the composting site

After reading this INFORMATION SHEET, YOU MUST be able to:

1. List down Personal Protective Equipment used in making Compost

Fertilizer
2. Enumerate different raw materials in making compost fertilizer
3. Familiarize the proper selection of raw materials

INTRODUCTION

Preparing raw materials, tools and equipment must be in

accordance with enterprise procedure and PNS for Organic Fertilizer.

1. Use of PPE Or Personal Protective Equipment

2. Use and proper handling of appropriate tools, equipment and raw
materials; and
3. Application of 5s of housekeeping

Unnecessary accident caused by hazardous activity in relation to

preparation of compost fertilizer may lessen if not totally eliminated through
the proper use of PPE.

Common Personal Protective Equipment

1. Gloves
2. Rubber boots
3. Mask

Basic raw materials for Composting

 Crop residue
 Animal manure
 Leguminous plant
 Kitchen waste

Selection for raw materials

Consider the sources of materials:

 Market waste/ Farm waste/ Kitchen waste

 Livestock manure/ Leguminous plants
 Identify materials rich in nitrogen
 Identify Materials rich in carbon:
 Size and kind of materials:
 Small material sizes are more favorable. Shredded materials
decompose more easily.

 Easily composted materials like banana leaves, stalks and fruit
peelings
 Materials readily available in forms (decomposed kitchen waste,
Kitchen garbage, cow and carabao manure, paper shreds and other
biodegradable materials.

WHAT COMPOST ORGANISMS NEED

1. A balance diet of compost materials

 “Browns” are compost materials that are brown and dry.
 “Browns” are high in carbon, which is energy food for microbes
 “Greens” are compost materials that are green and moist
 “Greens” are high in nitrogen, which microbes need to make
proteins

2. Just the right amount of air and water

- If there’s the right amount of oxygen and moisture, microbes can
rapidly grow and multiply. Too much or too little water, and microbes will
die

3. Organic materials will eventually decay, even in a cold compost pile. But
the decay process is speeded up in a hot compost pile. When bacteria and
fungi grow rapidly, they burn a lot of food, and give off a lot of heat. If the
compost pile is big enough, the heat will build up inside the pile. Bacteria
that grow well at high temperatures take over and speed up the decay
process.

Carbon Source Nitrogen Source

Grass Kakawate leaves
Rice Straw Ipil-ipil leaves
Corn stover Mongo
Wood Kudzu
Saw dust Wild Sunflower
Coco dust Katuray leaves
Coco coir Azolla
Paper Peanut
Cane top Animal manure

Carbon to Nitrogen Ratio

 Decomposition of organic materials in your compost pile is greatly

increased when you create the proper balance between the
carbonaceous materials and the nitrogen-rich materials
 Organic matter are carbon based material and it needs nitrogen to
heat up the carbon. Optimum ratio is 75:25 to facilitate a good

decomposition. The nitrogen will heat up the carbon materials
which activates the microbes to decompose the materials
 Too much nitrogen will produce excess ammonia resulting to
ammonia poisoning. Lesser nitrogen will not produce heat and the
compost will take longer to decompose

75 carbon : 25 nitrogen / 3 sacks carbon : 1 sack nitrogen

Unwanted materials in the pile

 Meat scraps- these can attract unwanted animal visitors and create
unpleasant odors. Rotten meat may produce bacteria that can pose
health hazard.
 Fats, oils and grease-large amounts of these will give your microbes
indigestion slowing down composting process. It also attracts
unwanted pests.
 Dropping from caged birds- Birds droppings may contain dangerous
disease pathogens.
 Droppings from dogs, cats, and other carnivores
 Human waste: The potential fort spreading diseases. Unsanitary
 Diseased plants: disease could spread later when compost is applied
to the plants.
