Multicultural Lesson 2
5th Grade Math

The students will be in 4 groups of 5. Each group will be researching facts about their assigned

culture and country. The students will be creating a presentation converting money using the

conversion calculator. The students will also be stating facts about the cultures language food,

gender roles, etc. Each presentation must have at least 4 money conversions and a minimum of 5

facts about the culture. The group must explain how they entered the equation into the calculator

to determine their answers.Each students must have at least one fact from the other classmates

presentations to exit the class.

Objective:

Students using technology to calculate currency. Students using research skills to gather

information. Students must prepare and present a detailed power point about their assigned

country and the countries currency. The powerpoint must include information about the

countries food, customs, language, and currency. The powerpoint must include at least 5

conversions of their countries currency to the United States dollar.

Multicultural Goal:

To develop multiple perspectives such as communication and culture.

Increase intercultural competence like global education.

Materials:

Internet, pencils, markers, PowerPoint, resources, notebook paper, calculator and math textbook.

Do First: (5 minutes.)
Multicultural Lesson 3
Prior to this assignment students have been learning about other countries/ cultures currency and

how to convert to U.S. dollars. The students will have an amount of money that I have laid on

their desk and then will have to convert this countries money into the correct U.S currency.

Mini-lesson: (15 minutes) Students will be learning currency conversions. I will assign the

groups of with a certain country/culture and I will teach the students how to change the countries

money into U.S. dollars.

Guided Practice: (10 minutes) I will provide the class with different examples of currency

conversion from different countries. I will start off with two review questions with the class and

then students will have to complete the rest of the problems by themselves. I will walk around

the class answering questions students have as well as observing the students. Independent

Practice: (20 min.) The students will spend this time researching the country and culture assigned

to them and come together as a group and use research from each student in their group. The

research will be used in their presentation.

Exit Slip: (5 minutes) The students will write a 5-7sentence paragraph about a different culture

from other classmates presentations.

Reflection:What specific subject or content was taught?Correct conversions of foreign currency

to the United States dollar. Demonstrating accurate calculation and notation of large numbers

and decimals. Planning and delivering a solid presentation. Thorough research skills.How

actively engaged are students? Most students are actively engaged and are not distracted by

things outside the lesson. Some groups got off task but after warned once they got back on track.

Strengths and weaknesses: Teaches students how to positively use technology, Prepares students

research skills for the future, Gives students knowledge about multiple different countries

cultures and their currencies. Weakness: More cultural aspects could have been included in this

lesson.
