Biography:

The young child being observed is 10 years old and happens to be my younger brother,

Ozias. He is in 5th grade and fairly smart. I have spent majority of my time watching him since

he was able to walk, talk etc. Our mom and his dad were together most of his life, then were

divorced when he was in third grade. When he started preschool everything seemed to going

very well. Throughout elementary school he was doing a fine job so far, no complaints or

concerns from any teachers. It wasn’t until he hit 5th grade when things started to slowly

changed. Homework or lessons that took around 30 minutes to complete started to take around

an hour to complete. Throughout the year, mom and I started to notice his attention span started

to become non existent. This also started happening in school; teachers started sending notes

home for his behavior. His teachers may have suspected it could be a learning disability. Our

mom went up to the school to have a meeting about what the issue could be. The teachers

suggested it it most likely ADHD or ADD and to seek help. During school he was put into a

program for a period of time where a teacher would help him better understand concepts as well

as receive help on his homework.

Physical Development:

Ozias spends most of his time inside watching tv, playing video games and doing

nothing. His parents try to encourage him to go outside and play with other boys in the

neighborhood or in the backyard. The house we live in is a small three bedroom house so the

yard is not very big especially now since our mom put in overground pool in the backyard. If he

does choose to go outside he doesn’t choose to do much or try to play with me and his other

sister but it’s kind of hard because we are so much older than him and he should play with boys.

So, he is not getting much physical activity. According to WebMD, by this age many children

should have good control of both large and small muscles and may have an interest in activities

that require coordinated physical skills-strength, endurance, and balance. He does want to get

into spray painting. Ozias is about 5’4” at his age which is no shock his dad’s side family is

pretty tall but he is getting pretty big on his weight.

Emotional Development:

As I spend time with Ozias and observe him I have seen how emotional and soft he is. If

something does not go his way or does not get what he wants he gets frustrated and throws

tantrums. One night observing him playing his violin I asked him what he was practicing on and

he just looked at me. He then started to tell me and I am asking questions to have a better

understanding. The more questions I asked him the more upset he got and put down his violin

and went to his room as if he did not want to explain to me. Our mom become worrisome about

this kind of behavior at his age. In chapter two of Education of Psychology Thoery and practice

12th Edition, states “Failure’ need not be real; it may be merely an inability to measure up to

one’s own standards or those of parents, teachers or brothers and sisters.” (Slavin 50)

Philosophical Development:

While observing Ozias I noticed that he like to not listen or break rules. Back in Chapter

2 Piaget’s stages or moral development, Ozias seems to be falling under the autonomous

morality stage at the moment. I have seen do something “bad” such as overflowing the

dishwasher and flooding up he kitchen and laughed when he got into trouble. Then told our mom

it was fine and he was happy about what he did. These kinds of decision are not influenced from

peers of his but what he may think others will like. In Kohlberg’s stages of reasoning he falls

under stage 2 and 3. Piaget observed that children at this age tend to base moral judgments on the

intentions of the actor rather than on the consequences of the actions. Ozias knows there are rules

but he is also thinking that he has say in what happens and tries to see how far he can go. To see

if he can be benefitted in any type of way. (AskDrSears).

Social Development:

Ozias, I believe does not know where his strengths and weakness are. He does not excel

well in his academics. He is right below average in his school work. In extracurricular activities

he does alright as far his violin but when it comes to physical activity there is some room for

improvement. Ozias social skills are alright as well. Sometimes he will get nervous or

embarrassed when he is the one put on the spot. For the most part he is not very shy, he will

communicate well with others. The more he is exposed o what other people are doing such as his

peers he has become more influenced to fit in or do what everyone else is doing. I do not think

this a concern in his development of growth. This is quite normal for his age.

Intellectual Development:

There are times when Ozias will not do anything because he does not want to. Then

sometimes he will ask me, my sister or his parents if he needs help on anything. He does struggle

a little bit when it comes to his academics but is great in other areas of his development. He can

be slow to understand information that is given to him. There are times when he will hear

something and then he does not understand. So he may have to hear it a couple times before he

completely understands. Ozias does a fine job in math but when it comes reading/writing his

skills tend to die down a little bit.

Recommendations:

From observing my younger brother, I have learned that children develop at different rates. Ozias

excels in many different areas and there are areas where he can improve for sure. There is no

need for any sort of medical help in my opinion rather just some tutoring. As far as his behavior I

think with time it will improve. The school program he is in has been helping him and he is

doing much better on his homework.

As for any teachers, I would suggest help or guidance on his classwork something to help him

focus. Ozias must have clear direct instruction for him to completely understand his assignments.

He tends to get distracted easily and it is up to the teacher on how he/she handles the situation. I

think teachers should him him find a way to integrate him back into the activity. As far as group

projects, Ozias cannot have too much on his plate, he cannot handle too much responsibility but

he is still able to participate in the project.
