impressionism began around 1874.
Let’s look at some examples.
Impressionism was new
• In Paris

supposed to
be a certain
way.
Impressionism did not go well.
• Some people
thought
impressionism
was a disgrace to
art. No one
normally painted
quickly and
totally outdoors
before.
Impressionism was TOO new.

• But there
were several
artists who
only wanted
to make
impressionist
art.
Impressionism takes off!

• Impressionist
artists banded
together and
held their own
shows.
Impressionism influences!

grew and
eventually
influenced
many of the
American artists
you will learn
about.
