WHAT IS MODERN ART?

• Refers to works produced during the


approximate period 1860-1970.
19th century to mid 20th century
• Throwing out of the OLD, embracing of the
New.
• There is more of EXPERIMENTATION in new
ways of seeing new ideas about how art
functions
WHAT IS MODERN ART?
• Modern art also witnessed the emergence of NEW
MEDIA, like PHOTOGRAPHY.
• Typically, modern artists rejected previous
Renaissance-based traditions, in favor of new
forms of artistic experimentation.
• new materials
• new techniques of painting
• developed new theories about how art should
reflect the perceived world, and what their
functions as artists should be.

• was a French modernist painter


• He was one of the first 19th-century artists to
paint modern life, and a pivotal figure in the
transition from Realism to Impressionism.

Modern Art saw a shift from the traditional art forms to :


- different use of media, like photography, collage, assemblage
- Different use of space in architecture – the high rise building (sky
scrapers)
- Significant rise in Abstract and Non-Representational Art
- Social and political transformation/ non-conformity
- Artists were eager for change

• From 1870’s to 1880’s, Impressionism was
light, spontaneous manner of painting which
began in FRANCE.

• It was as a REACTION against the


RESTRICTIONS and conventions of the
dominant ACADEMIC ART.

• It marked the BEGINNING of all MODERN ART

• The movement’s name was derived from
Monet’s early work,

Impression: Sunrise

• Impressionism marked a new way of painting


that was more concerned to capture the
subjective impression of light in the scene
IMPRESSIONISM

• Color became more important than line in the


creation of surfaces of vibrating color.

• Colors are applied side by side with little


mixing as possible, creating vibrant surface.
The optical mixing of colors occurs on the eye
of the viewer
