What stage of Benner’s philosophy would you like to achieve as a future nurse and give 5
character traits in achieving your goal.
There are five levels or stages that Benner described; novice, advanced beginner,
competent, proficient, and expert. After graduating, nurses start their job as novice. These are
the nurses that has little to no experience, inflexible, and dependent on rules and instructions
but with time and exposure, nurses can get off this stage and on to the next stages that has
more knowledge and skill on the field. As a future nurse, I would like to achieve the expert
stage. These are the ones who no longer relies on principles, rules, or guidelines to connect
situations and determine actions. These are the nurses who has much more background of
experience after being exposed to the field for so long strengthening intuitive grasp on clinical
situations. Nurses who are expert are fluid, flexible, and highly-proficient in doing their job;
which I think is vital since there are a lot of factors that can affect different situations in
healthcare. In order for me to become an expert nurse, I need to shape my character and earn
some traits. I need to have determination; nursing will always have challenges and obstacles,
but your willingness to learn and listen can overcome these and enable us to achieve our goal
which is to improve and do great. Another trait is versatility. Healthcare may require working
overtime and working around the clock. Nurses may experience a lot of stress and difficulty and
how they react to these are vital. We need to be versatile to easily adapt to these situations in
order to set forth the best care. Moreover, we need to be reliable. Doing what is expected and
doing it well is must, especially if there is someone’s life in line. Personal matters may have to
wait if tasks are not yet finished or there are emergencies emerging. Expert nurses know how
to make sacrifices to keep things running smoothly in their field and tries to offer as much
flexibility as possible. Further trait is being compassionate. I believe that the best healthcare
comes from the heart. You need to understand the patients’ suffering and willingly do
something about it. You need to learn how to look at patients holistically and address them as a
person not as a collection of symptoms. The last character trait that I can give is to be ethic-
centered. A strong sense of right and wrong helps nurses work through challenges and gives
them a moral compass with which helps them consistently make decisions that are in a
patient’s best interests. These traits may help us in achieving our goal in becoming an expert
nurse and provide the best healthcare.
