SECRET DEPARTURE OF RIZAL
People who knew the Secret Departure: Paciano, Saturnina, his Tio
Antonio and a few friends like Chengoy (Jose M. Cecilio)

May 1 1882-Rizal left Calamba and was able to reach Manila after ten hours of
journey via a carromata.

Rizal stayed in Manila for 2 days before his trip to Spain

May 3 1882- aboard the Spanish steamer Salvadora bound to Singapore (16 passengers)

Arrived at Singapore after 1week and stayed for 2days.


SINGAPORE
May 8, 1882 - While streamer is approaching
DOnato Lecha to Singapore, Rizal saw a beautiful island,
Ship captain from Asturias. Rizal describe him as an affable man
fascinated by its scenic beauty called Talim
Rizal played Chess with his fellow passengers who were much older Island
than him

May 9, 1882- the Salvadora docked in Singapore
Hotel de la Paz -Rizal registers here and spent 2 days
May 11, 1882 In Singapore, Rizal transferred to another
ship Djemnah, a French steamer, which left Singapore
for Europe
POINT GALLE • COLOMBO • ADEN
Point Galle May 17, 1882- Rizal wrote on his travel diary: “ The general
appearance of Point Galle is picturesque but lonely and quiet and at the same
time sad”

On May 18, 1882: Djemnah reached ; Rizal wrote; “Colombo is more


beautiful, smart and elegant than Singapore, Point Galle, and Manila.”

MAY 27, 1882 • He landed at Aden at about 8:30 a.m. He made


observation at the time. Aden – city hotter than Manila;
June 11, 1882: Djemnah proceeded its way to

SUEZ• NAPLES • MARSEILLES


Europe and reached Naples ; Rizal disembarked

and , accompanied by a guide , went around the

City of Naples for one hour .

JUNE 2, 1882 • He arrived at the Suez Canal en

route to Marseilles . Rizal was impressed in the

beautiful moonlight which reminded him of

Calamba and his family .

JUNE 12, 1882 • At ten o ’ clock in the evening ,


the boat anchored at Marseilles . He slept in

board . • Rizal visited the famous Chateau d ’ .


If

Rizal stayed two and a half days in Marseilles .


FINAL DESTINATION
JUNE 15, 1882 • He left Marseilles for
Barcelona in an express train. • Rizal
crossed the Pyreness and stopped for a
day at the frontier town of Port Bou

JUNE 16, 1882 • At 12:00 noon, Rizal


arrived at Barcelona and boarded in the
Fonda De España. • Rizal’s first impression
of Barcelona, the greatest city of
Cataluña and Spain’s second largest city
was unfavorable

Rizal came into close contact with Spanish liberal and

republican

Rizal was impressed with the way Spanish Masons

openly and freely criticized government policies and the

friars

He joined to secure support in his fight against the

friars in the Philippines

Financial Worries
Back home, financial woes besets Rizal’s family:

1.Drought and locusts affected the harvest of rice and sugarcane.


2.Rent was raised by the manager of the Dominican-owned land, due
to personal vendetta against the Mercado family.

Rizal suffered greatly like on June 24,1884: No breakfast, still


attended class, joined and won the gold contest in Greek, and
delivered a speech in honor of Luna and Hidalgo at restaurant Ingles,
Madrid.

•After graduating in Madrid, Rizal went to


Paris and Germany
•He continued to travel and observed the
European life and customs, government laws
in Paris, Heidelberg, Leipzig, and Berlin
•He also befriended several top German
Scientists: Dr. Feodor Jagor, Dr. Adolph B.
Meyer, Dr. Hans Meyer, and Dr. Rudolf Virchow

November 1885: Rizal lived in Paris for 4 months


Assistant of Louis de Weckert (a leading French
Ophthalmalogist) from November 1885 to February 1886
“with respect to the study of the ailments of the eyes, I am
doing well. I know now how to perform all the operations; I
only need to know what is going on inside the eye, which
requires much practice” – Rizal’s letter to his parents
dated January 1, 1886.

“learned the solfeggio, the piano, and the voice


culture in one month and a half. If you could
hear me sing, you would wish you were in Spain
because my voice is like braying of the asses.”

•March 11,1886, Rizal wrote a letter to his sister Trinidad which is
consist of his observations of the german people
