Welcome to the 21st Century Literature from the Philippines and the World–
Grade 12 Self-Learning Module (SLM) on Dimensions of Philippine Literary History
and Representative Texts and Authors from Each Region!

This module was designed to provide you with fun and meaningful opportunities for
guided and independent learning at your own pace and time. You will be enabled to
process the contents of the learning resource while being an active learner.

This module has the following parts:

Objectives: This will give you an idea of the skills or competencies you
are expected to learn in the module.

Motivation: This part includes an activity that aims to check what you already
know about the lesson to take. It also includes a brief drill or
review to help you link the current lesson with the previous one.

Instruction: This section provides a brief discussion of the lesson. This aims to
help you discover and understand new concepts and skills.

Practice: This comprises activities for independent practice to solidify your


understanding and skills of the topic.

Enrichment: In this portion, another activity will be given to you to enrich your
knowledge or skill of the lesson learned. This also tends retention
of learned concepts.

Evaluation: This is a task which aims to evaluate your level of mastery


in achieving the learning competency.

REGIONAL LITERATURE

INSTRUCTION:

TAGALOG LITERATURE
More popularly known now as the CALABARZON referring to the provinces of Cavite,
Laguna, Batangas, Rizal, and Quezon, Region IV-A is home to Tagalog-speaking people in the
Philippines.
The purpose of Tagalog Literature is to promote nationalism and regional identity of
Tagalog literature.

ILOCANO LITERATURE
Located in the northwest of Luzon, the IIocos Region or Region 1 is comprised of four
provinces namely: Ilocos Norte, Ilocos Sur, La Union and Pangasinan.

HIGHLIGHTS OF ILOCANO LITERATURE


Colorful literary writings Badeng – their own form of love song

HILIGAYNON LITERATURE
Visayan culture and tradition became the inspiration of the Hiligaynon writers in most of
their writings.

HIGHLIGHT OF HILIGAYNON CULTURE


Ili-ili or lullaby – a cradled song played and Balitaw – which is meant to be a love song

CEBUANO LITERATURE
Cebuano writers began using the form of literature to wage their propagandas and to
express their thoughts about betrayal of hopes and concerns about the Americans’ restriction on
freedom of expression.

Literary works of Cebuano Literature.


Vicente Sotto Father of Cebuano Literature. His work “Maming” was the first
written Cebuano Literature.
Ang Suga Medium publication for Cebuano writers.
Ernesto Lariosa Received a grant from the Cultural Center of the Philippines for
introducing social, sense, sound and story in Cebuano poetry.

MARANAO LITERATURE
Maranao literature is greatly influenced by Islam as their religion. The Muslim cultural
community greatly affects the region’s literary style and form.
