Essential Questions

How does contemporary regional

Filipino poetry apply the elements
of poetry?
1 GENRES OF LITERATURE
A. According to Form
1. Prose – is a form of language that exhibits a
natural flow of speech and grammatical structure,
rather than a rhythmic structure as in traditional
poetry. Prose comes from the Latin “prosa” which
means “straightforward”.
1.1 Narrative Prose
1.2 Nonfiction Prose
1 GENRES OF LITERATURE
2. Poetry – (the term derives from a variant of the Greek
term, poises, “making”) is a form of literature that uses aesthetic and
rhythmic qualities of language – such as phonetics , sound
symbolism, and metre – to evoke meanings in addition to, or in place
of, the prosaic ostensible meaning.
3. Drama – is a composition in verse or prose presenting a story in
pantomime or dialogue, containing conflict of characters,
particularly the ones who perform in front of audience on the
stage. The person who writes drama for stage directions is known as
a dramatist or playwright.
1 GENRES OF LITERATURE
B. According to content
1. Fiction – literature in the form of prose, especially short stories and
novels, that describes imaginary events and people.
2. Non-fiction – the branch of literature comprising works of narrative
prose dealing with or offering opinions or conjectures upon facts
and reality ,including biography, history and the essay (opposed to
fiction and distinguished from poetry and drama).
C. According to Presentation
1. Print
2. Oral
3. Digital
2 THE ELEMENTS of POETRY
Poetry, as man's inherited possession, is the
expression of strong feeling and thought which leads to
a communion between the individual and his
surroundings, but most usually between a person and
nature, the world, or the universe. Poetry is the means of
universalizing and perpetuating a thought, an idea, a
feeling, sensation, or internal experience.
2 THE ELEMENTS of POETRY
FORM: Each poet uses the "form" which will most effectively express
what he wants to convey to other human beings.
LINES: These are the building blocks with which to create a poem. The
words of each line proceed as usual from left to right, but they
curiously end where the poet wants them to stop. Therefore, you may
have some lines that are of equal length and others which are not.
Ultimately, then, poetry creates sensations, moods, and images in the
reader's mind.
STANZAS: The lines in a poem are most often divided into sections
looking as some sort of paragraphing. These we call stanzas. A
stanza, therefore, is the grouping of the lines, sort of like a paragraph.
● Sublime experience
● “The root and crown of language.” - Poetry
● Poetry and its product, poems, as defined by the
Merriam-Webster dictionary, are pieces “of writing
that usually have figurative language and that are
written in separate lines that often have a repeated
rhythm and sometimes rhyme.”

3 A Long History of Poetry
● The awit or song existed in many forms and we
used for varied purposes.
● Two major pre-Hispanic forms
1. Bugtong (riddle): used talinghaga or
metaphor that actually helped to answer to
the riddle.
2. Salawikain (proverb): used to express
pieces of wisdom or beliefs important to
Filipino society.

3 How was the Awit used?
● Pre-Hispanic Filipinos extensively used songs or
awit. For example, for the Tagalog people, there
were songs for a surprising number of purposes
1. Uyayi or lullaby
2. Soliranin (songs for travelers)
3. Kumintang (song for war)
4. Maluway (song for collective labor)
5. Kundiman ( a song of melancholy love)
6. Pamamanhikan ( a song of the bridegroom to
his bride as he asks for her hand in marriage.
3 A Long History of Poetry
Epics
● The major pre-Hispanic poem
● Were long, episodic, chanted poem telling
stories, normally about legendary heroes and
their adventures, often contending with, and
also being aided by, supernatural creatures
and spirits.
● These stories were seen as important parts of
the cultures and beliefs of these societies.
3 A Long History of Poetry: Arrival of the
Spanish
Baybayin
● Method of writing for the Tagalog was suppressed
along with many of the epics and poems already
existing.
Pasyon
● A showcase of phenomenon where Spanish clergy
clergy set out to replace the old oral heroes with
Jesus Christ
● First popularized by Gaspar Aquino de Belen and
perpetrated by Mariano Pilapil
3 A Long History of Poetry: Arrival of the
Spanish
Francisco Baltazar
● The most notable poet of the Spanish era
● His poetry such as the Tagalog-written Florante at Laura
showcased his education in the schools in Manila
● He was the one of the first new emerging Filipinos from the
new rising middle class.
● Despite the efforts of the Spanish clergy, traditional
Philippine poetry never truly went away.

3 A Long History of Poetry: Arrival of the
Americans
● The use of English as a medium of education
brought with it the poetry in that language.
● Filipinos learned not only the language but poetic
styles as well.
● Free verse and New criticism: became the
buzzwords of poets such as Angela Manalang and
Jose Garcia Villa Gracia.
Writer Salvador P. Lopez developed new themes
beyond the popular romantic themes.
4 Regions and Regional Culture
● The Philippines has a unique cultural landscape. One
shaped by a myriad of languages and traditions
determined by their geographical and linguistic
regions.

● As discussed by National Artist Bienvenido Lumbera,

the reason for a very Manila centric view of Philippine
culture and and cultural development has to do with
the fact that Manila remains the center power in the
Philippines.
5 Bikol Literature
● Prominent writers such as screenwriter Ricky Lee and
poet Marne Kilates are both natives of Bikol, yet are
not known as Bikolano writers.
● Bikol writers have adopted forms of literature for their
own enjoyment, however. There are many corridos and
religious works coming from the press owned by
Mariano Perfecto.
● These eventually led to the creation and enjoyment of
other forms of entertainment such as the comedia and
the zarzuela, in the 1800s and early 1900s.

did you react when you saw it for the first time? if
no, how would your reaction be?
● Why do you think people love this tourist
destination?
6 A Volcanic Poet
Kristian Sendon Cordero
● Described by the poet Marne Kilates as
the “enfant terrible” of Bikol writing.
● The term enfant terrible (associated
with the French poet Arthur Rimbaud)
usually refers to a person who is
controversial, often by being innovative
and questioning of the establishment,
both of which cordero has done.
● He has multiple Palanca awards in
poetry, fiction, and essay.

6 Mayon by Kristian Sendon Cordero
Camarines Sur

image. Defend the choices of both in light of how
Mount Mayon is seen in the poem.
6 Respond critically to the following questions to process the
selection.

9. Discuss the author used a security guard as the
