DAILY LEARNING PLAN IN INTRODUCTION TO THE PHILOSOPHY OF THE HUMAN PERSON
Thales- man born from other animals-quickly find nourishment for themselves. “Men were naturally better
than women”.
Socrates- body comes from his world of matter. Man as a moral and thinking being.
Plato- man as a knower (processor of an immortal soul). Man is a soul using body.
Aristotle- man as a rational and social animal/political animal. Man is not the center of the universe; he is
only a part of it.
St. Augustine- the ultimate felicity of man is the contemplation of truth, which properly belongs to man
alone.
St. Thomas Aquinas- man is a creature of God. Man is a composite of body and soul.
Teilhard de Chardin- man is a significant link between the physical order and the spiritual one.
Jean Paul Sartre- man is a useless passion.
Gabriel Marcel- man is a homo aviator, a man of hope.
Martin Heidegger- is man is being there, part of the world and part of the next.
Martin Buber- Man is the subject as well as the object of knowledge.
Charles Darwin- Man is the rudest state in which he now exists is the dominant animal that has ever
appeared on Earth.
Rene Descartes- it is the mind the makes us humans. The mind is the real self.
David Hume- the self is just a bundle of perceptions, like links in a chain.

c). ABSTRACTION
1. In your opinion, what are the traits that distinguish humans from all other beings that exist?
Answer:
The ability to socially learn and communicate abstract thoughts that can be passed down from
generation to generation is what distinguishes humans from other animals. This is referred as
CULTURE.
Language, society, technology, theater, music, mythology, religion, politics, and subsistence
strategies are all examples of culture.
d). ASSESSMENT
Identification: Identify the western philosopher that is being asked in the following sentences. Write your
answer on the space provided.

Buddha
- This suffering is cause by our own worldly desire. In other words, it’s our fault.
Judaism
- The three main beliefs at the center of Judaism are Monotheism, Identity, and covenant (an agreement
between God and his people). The most important teachings of Judaism is that there is one God, who wants
people to do what is just and compassionate.
Hinduism
- The first, dharma, means to act virtuously and righteously.
